Ultra-light turntable with Neo PSU MK2, ready for the cartridge of your choice

RP8 and RP10 technology in a more accessible form

The Planar 6 succeeds the award-winning RP6 and is Rega's first turntable with a Tancast 8 foam core plinth. It takes the ideas behind the RP8 and RP10, namely an ultra-light yet rigid base, a matched motor and a separate power supply, and brings them to a price class where, according to Rega, its performance exceeds its cost. This version comes in matt Polaris grey with high-gloss black edge trim, together with the RB330 tonearm and the Neo PSU MK2 power supply, without a cartridge. It is hand-built in England.

Platter, sub-platter and feet

The platter consists of two layers of float glass, one smoked and one clear, bonded under pressure, as on the RP8. It sits on a sub-platter machined from a single piece of aluminium and carefully balanced. A wool felt mat is included; it is anti-static and does not stick to records. The feet are aluminium with an elastomer insert to isolate the turntable from the surface it stands on.

Cartridge choice and system

Without a factory-fitted cartridge, the Planar 6 leaves the choice to you: it pairs ideally with the Rega Nd5, Nd7 and Nd9 (MM) or the Ania, Ania Pro and Apheta 3 (MC). Depending on the cartridge you will need an MM or MC phono stage, such as the Rega Fono MM MK5 and Fono MC MK4, or an amplifier with the matching input.

Ultra-light Tancast 8 plinth

Rega has argued for decades that a turntable does not need to be heavy to sound right. The Planar 6 makes the case with the most advanced plinth Rega had ever offered in this price class.

A material from aerospace

The core of the base is Tancast 8, an ultra-low-density polyurethane foam that comes from the aerospace industry. The core is sandwiched between sheets of matt Polaris grey High Pressure Laminate (HPL), a scratch-resistant material that does not show fingerprints. The combination delivers very high stiffness with minimal mass. A light base stores less energy from the motor, the bearing and the room, so fewer vibrations reach the stylus and blur the music.

Double Brace: rigidity where it matters

Double Brace technology integrates custom-matched aluminium pillars for the tonearm and the main hub, linked by braces on the top and bottom faces of the plinth. This makes the most critical part of the turntable, the line connecting the stylus to the record spindle, exceptionally rigid without increasing overall weight. The result can be heard as a cleaner background, a steadier stereo image and bass with more control and depth. It is the same approach Rega applies across its upper Planar models, from the Planar 6 RS to the Planar 10.

Polaris finish

The matt Polaris grey HPL surface is combined with high-gloss black polymer edge trim. It resists scratches and does not show fingerprints, so the turntable keeps its looks through everyday use.

Neo PSU MK2 and matched motor

On the Planar 6, motor and power supply are not simply two parts in the same box. Each motor is hand-matched to its own Neo PSU MK2, so the anti-vibration circuit is tuned precisely for that particular unit.

DSP generator with crystal reference

The Neo PSU MK2 uses the same DSP generator as the Planar 10 power supply, driven by a high-stability crystal. It produces a very low-distortion sine wave for the 24 V synchronous motor, reducing noise and improving speed stability and accuracy. Switching between 33⅓ and 45 rpm is electronic, while fine speed adjustment, in 0.01 rpm steps, is made from the rear panel using the supplied tool. The power supply arrives calibrated from the factory, so the turntable performs at its best from the very first record.

Belt and drive

The motor drives the aluminium sub-platter through a custom pulley and the Reference EBLT belt, fitted as standard. The belt is manufactured with great precision to be round and consistent, something Rega considers essential for stable speed. Together with the heavy glass platter, the system keeps the flow of the music steady and pitch accurate. Speed can be checked at any time with Rega's optional Strobe Kit designed for the Neo PSU.

Separate power

The Neo PSU MK2 is fed by the Rega PS1 wall supply (24 V AC, 350 mA) and connects to the turntable via a Mini DIN cable. Consumption is just 7.2 W, and the output to the motor is protected by a resettable fuse.

RB330 tonearm

The tonearm is the heart of every Rega turntable, and the company makes it entirely in-house. The Planar 6 is fitted with the hand-assembled RB330, complete with a stainless steel balance weight.

Designed with 3D CAD/CAM

The RB330 was designed using 3D CAD and CAM and distils more than 35 years of Rega tonearm experience. The new bearing housing and the arm tube with redistributed mass reduce resonance points, while Rega's own high-precision bearings provide very low friction and excellent stability. The arm tube is a high-pressure die-cast alloy with outstanding rigidity. As a result, the arm retrieves more information from the groove.

Ready for upgrades

With an effective mass of 11 g and 3-point cartridge fixing, the RB330 suits every Rega cartridge, from the Nd5 and Nd7 to the moving coil Ania Pro and Apheta 3, as well as many cartridges from other makers. It has an integrated anti-skating mechanism, a cueing lever and an arm clip. The hand-fitted internal wiring and the low-capacitance phono cable with Neutrik plugs carry the cartridge's delicate signal to the phono stage with minimal loss, preserving detail and dynamics.

Geometry

The RB330 has an effective length of 23.65 cm, an offset angle of 21.55°, an overhang of 1.45 cm and a mounting distance of 22.2 cm from the platter centre. These figures are shared across Rega tonearms, which makes aligning any new cartridge straightforward.
