MM cartridge with fine line stylus and N55 neodymium magnet

Next-level moving magnet

The Nd7 is a hand-built stereo moving magnet (MM) cartridge from Rega's new Nd series, made in England. It combines the series' N55 neodymium magnet and miniaturised parallel coils with a fine line stylus cut from a nude mono-crystal diamond, a profile usually found on far more expensive cartridges. The goal is even greater resolution of detail and a more stable stereo image.

Factory option on the Planar 6 and Planar 8

The Nd7 is available factory-fitted to the Planar 6 and Planar 8 turntables, at a lower price than buying it separately. With an output of 5 to 6 mV it works with any MM phono stage, such as the Fono MM MK5 or the phono stages of the Elex MK4 and Elicit MK5 amplifiers. Jason Kennedy of The Ear even recommended it as an alternative to MC cartridges at the same price.

Awards, rebuild and warranty

The Nd7 has earned an Editor's Choice from The Ear and Best Buy and Best Cartridge awards from AVForums. Through the Rega rebuild scheme, a worn cartridge can be rebuilt with a new cantilever, stylus and pivot pad at a reduced price. It is covered by Rega's Lifetime Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects.

Fine line stylus

What sets the Nd7 apart from the Nd3 and Nd5 is its stylus profile. Rega chose a fine line stylus cut from a nude mono-crystal diamond, one of the most advanced profiles available for playing vinyl records. It is a choice usually found on moving coil cartridges in a much higher class, and it brings a clear step up in the amount of information retrieved from each groove.

Precision geometry

The fine line stylus has a radius of just 3 μm in the horizontal plane and 30 μm in the vertical. This means it contacts the groove walls over a very narrow but tall area, similar to the shape of the cutting head that made the record. The stylus can therefore read the tiniest undulations in the groove, where the high frequencies, the harmonics of instruments and the atmosphere of the recording space are stored. The longer vertical contact line also spreads the tracking force over a larger area of the groove wall.

What you hear

The theory translates into audible results. In practice, the Nd7 delivers more detail, cleaner treble and lower distortion, especially in the inner grooves near the label, where simpler styli struggle. Voices gain texture, strings breathe and percussion has natural attack and decay. The stylus is mounted on an aluminium cantilever that combines low mass with good stiffness, with a recommended tracking force of 1.75 g for the ideal balance between accuracy and care for your records.

N55 magnet and generator

A fine line stylus can read more information from the groove, but that information must then be converted into an electrical signal without loss or alteration. That is why the Nd7 relies on the Nd series generator, which Rega developed over around ten years of research and testing to get the most from every stylus profile in the range.

The strongest magnet

The heart of the generator is its magnet. The Nd7 uses an N55 neodymium magnet, considered the strongest commercially available and usually fitted to high-end moving coil cartridges. According to Rega, the Nd series is the first to use it in a moving magnet cartridge. Its great strength allows a smaller, lighter magnet and therefore lower moving mass, without reducing output, which remains at 5 to 6 mV. The cartridge thus combines the ease of use of an MM design with the speed of response a fine line stylus demands.

A wider soundstage

The coils are the second critical element. The Nd7's miniaturised parallel coils have 1275 turns of 38 μm wire, for low inductance and better high-frequency response. An optimised pole gap improves balance between the left and right channels and increases their separation. The result is a wider, deeper stereo soundstage, with precise placement of instruments and a convincing sense of space, making the Nd7 especially appealing to listeners who enjoy acoustic and classical music recorded in real spaces.

For the Planar 6 and Planar 8

The Nd7 was designed to work with Rega tonearms and performs at its best on the Planar 6 and Planar 8 turntables, where it is also available as a factory-fitted option. This pairing makes full use of the rigidity and precision of these turntables, with a cartridge perfectly matched to their capabilities and their tonearms.

PPS body and 3-point mounting

The construction supports the performance. The Nd7 body is made from glass-filled PPS, a light and rigid material that limits unwanted resonances. At just 6 g it also reduces stress on the tonearm bearings, so the arm can move freely. Rega's three-point mounting forms a rigid connection to the tonearm, through which vibrations are quickly drained away from the stylus. Fitting to a Rega tonearm is simple, with correct alignment achieved almost automatically, while the yellow window marks out the Nd7 within the range and makes it easy to recognise.

An alternative to MC cartridges

This is perhaps its greatest advantage. For many listeners, the Nd7 is an attractive alternative to a moving coil cartridge. Jason Kennedy of The Ear noted that he would choose it over MC cartridges at the same price for the Planar 6 and Planar 8. Its high output means no specialist MC phono stage is needed: the Nd7 works with the Fono MM MK5 and with the phono stages of the Elex MK4 and Elicit MK5 amplifiers, keeping the whole system simple and cost-effective.
