Rega's entry into the world of moving coil
The MC cartridge that makes the upgrade affordable
The Rega Ania is the moving coil (MC) cartridge with which the British company brought the know-how of the Apheta and Aphelion to a far more accessible level. It uses the same hand-wound micro coil as the rest of Rega's MC range, an elliptical diamond stylus and an aluminium cantilever. For anyone already running a Rega turntable with a moving magnet cartridge, it is the most logical next step towards more detail, speed and clarity.
Sound character
The Ania delivers lively dynamics and natural tonality, with good resolution of the small details hidden in the groove. Bass is tight and controlled, the midrange has body and the treble stays clean without harshness. It rewards both focused listening and everyday use, without needing an exotic system to show what it can do.
Ideal pairings
Rega recommends the Ania for the Planar 3 and Planar 6, with which it shares the philosophy of light, rigid construction. It fits equally well on any Rega tonearm with three-point fixing (RB330, RB880, RB3000). As with every true MC cartridge its output is low, so it needs a phono stage with an MC input and enough gain, such as the Rega Fono MC.
Moving coil generator
At the heart of the Ania is one of the smallest moving coil generators made today. The hand-wound coil sits on an iron micro cross and moves within the field of a powerful, high-energy neodymium magnet. It is a hand-built design, assembled at Rega's own factory in the UK, where the company also makes the rest of its MC range.
Minimal moving mass
Rega designs its MC cartridges as ultra-low-mass, undamped generators. The cantilever pivots on a rhomboid point and works with a magnet system designed exclusively by the company. The less mass the groove has to move, the faster the stylus responds to sudden transients and the less the information is smeared. Rega considers that conventional MC cartridges, with a steel tie wire and foam damping, lose clarity at high frequencies; its own approach avoids both. This design demands a body with near-zero tolerances, so that every part stays exactly where it should.
Fine wire, clean signal
The coil uses wire just 0.018 mm in diameter, the same found in the more expensive cartridges of the range. Combined with the elliptical diamond stylus and the aluminium cantilever, the generator turns the tiny modulations of the groove into a signal with natural tone, speed and clean outlines, even in the densest passages of a recording. The same core architecture is used in the Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2, so an Ania owner is already hearing the signature of the company's flagship MC range.
Glass-filled PPS body
To bring Rega's MC technology to a lower price, the engineers had to find an alternative to the solid aluminium of the Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2, which is precision-machined and expensive to make. The goal was to leave the generator untouched and change only the material that holds it.
The material
The answer was PPS-Fortron, a high-performance engineering polymer reinforced with 40% glass fibre, valued for its stability. It is very rigid, dimensionally stable and durable over time, properties essential for holding the generator in the right position with near-zero tolerances. With this material the Ania costs about half as much as the Apheta 3, without giving up its core architecture. The choice is not a compromise but a different engineering solution: body mass stays low and stiffness high, two properties Rega considers critical for controlling resonance.
A complex mould
After rapid prototyping, Rega commissioned specialist toolmakers to build a high-pressure injection mould of eight parts, four of which move in sync. Its development took around a year. The result is a body that can be reproduced consistently, so every Ania is made to the same precision as the one before it. Rega argues that this investment gives the Ania musicality, speed, clarity and detail that stand out at its price, and reviews in The Ear and Hi-Fi Choice recommended it without reservation.
Fitting and set-up
An MC cartridge only delivers what it promises when it is fitted and loaded correctly. The Ania is designed to make this simple and precise, especially on Rega tonearms, where installation is completed in a few minutes and leaves no room for alignment errors that would rob the cartridge of its detail.
Three-point fixing
The body uses Rega's three-point fixing system. On a Rega arm the cartridge sits in only one correct position, so overhang is set automatically and alignment needs no time-consuming measurement. A clear rigid cover protects the very fine internal wires during fitting. The recommended tracking force is 1.75 to 2.00 g and is easily set with the tonearm counterweight and a stylus gauge such as the Rega Atlas. On other makers' arms the Ania fits normally with two screws; it simply needs conventional alignment.
Correct loading
With an output of 350 μV, the Ania needs an MC phono stage, or an MM stage preceded by a suitable step-up transformer, so that it has enough gain to reach a normal listening level. Rega recommends a 100 Ω load, 1000 pF capacitance and high gain, which corresponds to the 'On' position on its own phono stages. With these settings the cartridge delivers the full balance, dynamics and low distortion it was designed for. If the phono stage has no adjustable loading, 100 Ω is a good reference point, while the 10 Ω internal impedance also makes the cartridge compatible with step-up transformers.
