MC cartridge with a nude Vital stylus for deeper groove retrieval
The Ania with a stylus from the Apheta
The Rega Ania Pro is a moving coil cartridge that keeps the rigid body and hand-wound generator of the Ania but upgrades the most critical detail: the stylus. Here Rega uses a nude diamond with a Vital profile, the stylus philosophy inherited from the Apheta range, to recover as much information from the groove as possible. It is easy to recognise by its red protective cover.
Sound character
Rega sums up its sound in three phrases: tight bass, warm mids and accurate highs. The result is balanced and detailed, with wide dynamic range, a spacious soundstage and natural tonal balance. Reviewers at Hi-Fi Choice and The Ear described it as a clear step up from the Ania, especially on Rega turntables.
Which turntables it is made for
Rega recommends the Ania Pro as the ideal cartridge for the Planar 6 and Planar 8, and offers versions of both turntables with the cartridge factory-fitted. It also suits the Planar 3 and any Rega tonearm with three-point fixing, such as the RB330 and RB880. It needs a phono stage with an MC input.
The Vital stylus
The stylus is the only part of the system that actually touches the music. For the Ania Pro Rega chose a nude diamond with a Vital profile, designed to read the groove in greater depth, without changing anything else in the proven architecture of the Ania.
Nude diamond
Unlike a bonded stylus, where the diamond sits on a metal shank, a nude diamond is made entirely of the same material. This reduces the mass at the tip of the cantilever, so the stylus follows fast modulations more faithfully. The Vital profile has a finer contact radius, so it touches more of the groove wall and recovers information lost with simpler profiles, especially in the inner grooves of a record, where tracing distortion usually rises.
What the listener gains
The stylus is mounted on an aluminium cantilever at 90 degrees for better rigidity and signal transfer. In practice this means a wider soundstage, better separation of instruments and more accurate rendering of subtle changes in level, qualities that are immediately audible on acoustic and orchestral recordings.
The same school of stylus was used on Rega's more expensive cartridges and here reaches a cartridge that costs considerably less. Because a nude diamond reads less-worn areas of the groove wall, it often brings new life to records already played many times with simpler styli, revealing details that had not been heard before.
Hand-wound MC generator
As across Rega's whole moving coil range, the Ania Pro's coil is wound by hand at the company's factory in the UK, to tolerances measured in thousandths of a millimetre. It is the same build technique applied to the Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2, so the Ania Pro shares the generator philosophy of cartridges costing several times more.
Iron micro cross
The coil is wound on an iron micro cross and moves within the field of a powerful neodymium magnet. The very low mass of the generator lets the stylus follow the groove more closely, which Rega considers fundamental to speed and clarity of sound, and which explains why the company has refined this assembly over successive generations of its MC range. The coil wire is just 0.018 mm in diameter.
Undamped
Rega designs all of its MC cartridges as ultra-low-mass, undamped generators, a philosophy it has refined for more than fifteen years, with a rhomboid cantilever pivot and a magnet system of its own exclusive design. With no rubber damping parts that wear, harden and change behaviour over time, the cartridge keeps a consistent character for years.
Rega points out that in conventional MC cartridges the tie wire creates high-frequency resonances that foam damping only partly controls. By avoiding both, the Ania Pro combines clean, open treble with tight, well-controlled bass, while the midrange keeps the warmth Rega describes.
Body and installation
The Ania Pro's body is the same rigid PPS shell developed for the Ania, with stainless steel inserts for firm, repeatable clamping to the tonearm. Firm clamping is a precondition for transferring the energy of the stylus to the tonearm without losses or unwanted vibration, and it keeps the set-up stable over time.
A year for a mould
PPS-Fortron with 40% glass fibre is extremely rigid and stable. Rega moved from rapid prototyping to a complex injection mould whose development took around a year. This achieves precision close to that of aluminium bodies, at a cost that keeps the cartridge at a sensible level and lets the budget go into the stylus.
Easy alignment
Thanks to three-point fixing, overhang is set automatically on a Rega arm. The red cover protects the fine wires during fitting and can be removed once the cartridge is in place. Rega recommends a tracking force of 1.75 to 2.00 g, best set with a stylus gauge such as the Rega Atlas, and, at the phono stage, a 100 Ω load, 1000 pF capacitance and high gain. The 0.35 mV output calls for an MC stage with sufficient gain.
On Rega phono stages such as the Fono MC and Aura MC, the factory settings cover all of the company's MC cartridges, so connection needs no experimentation and the cartridge can be enjoyed from the very first record. If you prefer a ready-made solution, the Planar 6 and Planar 8 are also available with the Ania Pro factory-fitted and set up.
