Rega's reference fully balanced MC phono stage
Rega's reference phono stage
The Aura MC is Rega's flagship phono stage. It is a fully adjustable, fully balanced three-stage design dedicated exclusively to moving coil (MC) cartridges and made in England. It was developed without compromise, with the aim of recovering all the information held in a record groove, and is the natural partner for the Planar 10, the Naia and the flagship Aphelion 2 cartridge.
Nothing superfluous
Rega deliberately added no functions that do not contribute to the sound, so the signal path is never burdened. The large, purpose-designed enclosure, weighing 13 kg, houses a regulated power supply with a large toroidal transformer and offers both unbalanced (RCA) and balanced (XLR) outputs.
Reviews and warranty
The Aura MC has earned five stars from What Hi-Fi? and The Ear, an Editor's Choice from Hi-Fi Choice and a Best Buy from AVForums. Jason Kennedy described it as a clearly top-notch phono preamplifier. It is covered by Rega's Lifetime Limited Warranty against confirmed manufacturing defects.
Uncompromising design
The Aura MC was born from a simple idea: to design a phono stage dedicated exclusively to moving coil cartridges, free from the cost and size constraints that inevitably apply to more affordable products. The result is Rega's reference in phono amplification, on which later models such as the Aos MC were also based. It represents everything Rega has learned about amplifying the tiny signal of a moving coil cartridge.
Fully balanced
Architecture is the foundation of everything here. The Aura MC is fully balanced throughout the signal path. In a balanced design each channel carries two opposite versions of the same signal, so noise and interference that affect both equally cancel each other out. For the extremely small signals of an MC cartridge, often less than a thousandth of a volt, this architecture offers measurably lower noise and a quieter background, from which even the subtlest details of a recording emerge with clarity and presence.
A point of reference
Frequency response extends from 13.5 Hz to 100 kHz, RIAA accuracy is ±0.2 dB from 100 Hz to 50 kHz and total harmonic distortion is limited to 0.03%. Yet the numbers are only one side of the story. Rega considers the Aura MC so special that it recommends it as the ideal tool for hearing what a vinyl record can truly deliver in a high-end system, with correct tonal balance, realistic dynamics and an impressive sense of space and scale that draws the listener into the performance.
Three gain stages
The heart of the Aura MC is a three-stage circuit in which each stage has a clearly defined role. This division of labour allows each section to be optimised for its job, rather than asking a single circuit to do everything at once. All stages operate in class A, avoiding the transitions that can add distortion to small signals, so the music stays clean at every level.
First and second stages
The most delicate work happens right at the input. The first stage is a symmetrical, complementary class A design using ultra-low-noise FET transistors. No bias current flows through the cartridge coil and no coupling components are used at the input, so the signal arrives as cleanly as possible. The same stage drives the passive high-frequency part of the RIAA curve. The second stage is a symmetrical differential class A design with a common base driver, which also acts as an active amplifier for the low-frequency part of the RIAA curve.
Third stage and outputs
The third stage inverts the signal to create the balanced XLR output, while an unbalanced RCA output is also provided. Maximum output level reaches 14.5 V RMS unbalanced and 29 V RMS balanced, with output impedances of 100 Ω and 200 Ω respectively. This headroom is enormous, and means that even the most demanding dynamic peaks are reproduced without any trace of strain, whichever preamplifier or amplifier you connect it to in your system.
Power supply and adjustment
A phono stage is only as good as its power supply. In the Aura MC, Rega gave the power supply the same attention as the signal circuit, and combined this solid foundation with a complete set of adjustments for any moving coil cartridge you might choose to use.
A supply with headroom
This is one of the greatest strengths of the Aura MC. The power supply is symmetrical, regulated and built from discrete components, with a large toroidal transformer. It runs at a voltage around 60% higher than is usually found in phono stages, providing greater headroom and lower distortion. The RIAA circuit uses polypropylene capacitors with 1% tolerance, while the gain, Mute and Mono functions are handled by high-quality relays, so the switches themselves are kept out of the signal path entirely.
Settings for every cartridge
Flexibility completes the picture. Resistive loading can be set to 50, 100, 150, 300 or 400 Ω and capacitive loading to five values from 1000 to 5700 pF. Gain is selectable at 69.5 dB or 63.5 dB, with sensitivity of 67 μV or 131 μV for 200 mV output. The Mono function is particularly useful for mono records and for checking cartridge alignment and channel balance. Rega recommends the Aura MC with the Planar 10, the Aphelion 2, the Apheta 3, the Aethos amplifier and the Osiris loudspeakers, for a true reference system in which every component is designed to bring out the best in the others.
