The essence of the Naiad in an ultra-light high-end turntable

An affordable Naiad

The Planar 8 is not simply an evolution of the RP8. Rega designed it from scratch to capture the essence of the Naiad, its experimental reference turntable, in a far more accessible class. The result is a skeletal, ultra-light turntable with the RB880 tonearm and the Neo PSU MK2 power supply, supplied without a cartridge, in matt Polaris grey. The outer frame of the RP8 has been replaced by a single-piece removable dust cover, reducing mass even further. It is hand-built in England.

Triple-layer platter and main bearing

The platter consists of three layers of glass of different thicknesses, bonded under pressure. Most of its mass sits at the rim for a strong flywheel effect, while the lighter centre reduces load on the bearing. The platter rests on a sub-platter machined from a single piece of aluminium, with a hardened steel spindle running in a brass housing.

Choosing a cartridge

Without a factory-fitted cartridge, the Planar 8 can be paired with the Rega Nd7 and Nd9 (MM) or the Ania Pro, Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2 (MC). For moving coil cartridges Rega recommends phono stages such as the Aura MC. Among other awards, the Planar 8 has been named What Hi-Fi? Best Turntable Over £2000 (2019) and Hi-Fi Choice Group Test Winner (2023).

Skeletal Tancast 8 plinth

Rega's goal for the Planar 8 was to extract as much information as possible from the record surface. The key is a plinth that removes every gram of material that is not needed, following the logic of the Naiad.

Polyurethane foam between HPL

The core is Tancast 8, an extremely light polyurethane foam sandwiched between two thin layers of High Pressure Laminate (HPL). The plinth is 30% lighter than that of the original RP8 and at the same time more rigid, a combination at the heart of Rega's lightweight design philosophy. A base with such low mass stores very little energy, so vibrations from the motor, the bearing and the room do not find their way back to the stylus.

Double Brace

Phenolic braces are placed on the top and bottom faces between the tonearm mount and the main bearing. They form a rigid beam exactly along the line connecting the stylus to the record spindle, limiting energy absorption and unwanted resonance. The braces are used only where needed, so overall mass stays minimal.

Less mass, everywhere

The same logic applies to the dust cover: the outer frame of the RP8 has been dropped and replaced with a single-piece removable lid. AVForums singled out the resonance control and the light, rigid construction as key strengths of the Planar 8, and Hi-Fi Choice praised it for moving forward what state-of-the-art vinyl playback means at this price, calling it thrilling and entertaining.

RB880 tonearm

The Planar 8 comes as standard with the RB880 tonearm, hand-assembled at Rega. It is the arm that largely defines the level of detail and stability the turntable can achieve.

Zero-tolerance bearings

The RB880 uses a preloaded zero-tolerance bearing, machined to an accuracy of less than one thousandth of a millimetre. Bearings are hand-selected and matched so that movement is almost friction-free with no measurable play. The redesigned aluminium vertical bearing housing, with a stainless steel sleeve and shaft, improves mounting stability on the plinth.

Arm tube and balance weight

The new arm tube uses redistributed mass to reduce resonance points. The stainless steel balance weight is thinner than on previous arms, bringing its mass closer to the pivot. An effective mass of 11 g makes the RB880 compatible with a wide range of moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. Its low-mass aluminium and stainless steel construction delivers high stability and rigidity whichever cartridge you choose, and the arm is ready for future upgrades up to the Aphelion 2.

Signal without loss

The low-capacitance phono cable, made by Rega, carries the cartridge's delicate signal to the phono stage with minimal loss, preserving detail and dynamics. The cartridge is fixed with Rega's 3-point system, which makes alignment straightforward with the company's own cartridges such as the Nd9, Ania Pro and Apheta 3.

Motor, belt and Neo PSU MK2

Speed stability and low motor noise matter as much as the plinth and the tonearm. On the Planar 8, Rega treats the drive as a single, integrated system.

Bottom-mounted motor

The 24 V low-vibration synchronous motor is mounted from underneath the plinth, as on the Naiad, so its vibrations are isolated from the structure rather than passed into the plinth. Each motor is hand-tuned to its own Neo PSU MK2 power supply for optimum operation of the anti-vibration circuit, so the two always work as a matched pair.

EBLT belt

The Reference EBLT belt is fitted as standard. Rega spent three years developing its special rubber compound, and it is produced on precision tooling so that it is perfectly round and dimensionally accurate. This ensures smooth drive and stable rotation of the heavy glass platter, record after record.

Neo PSU MK2

The power supply uses a DSP generator based on a crystal reference, producing a stable drive signal with less than 0.15% distortion. It offers electronic switching between 33⅓ and 45 rpm, an anti-vibration circuit and user fine speed adjustment in 0.01 rpm steps. It arrives calibrated from the factory, so the turntable performs correctly from the very first record. It is fed by the Rega PS1 wall supply (24 V AC, 350 mA), consumes just 7.2 W, and its motor output is protected by a resettable fuse. Speed can also be checked with Rega's optional Strobe Kit, designed for use with the Neo PSU.
