Rega's flagship MM cartridge with a boron cantilever
The peak of the Nd series
The Nd9 is the highest-performing moving magnet (MM) cartridge Rega has ever made. It is a hand-built stereo cartridge that combines the Nd series' N55 neodymium magnet with a boron cantilever and a fine line nude diamond stylus, technologies derived from the company's flagship moving coil cartridge, the Aphelion 2. A glass-filled PPS body and Rega pivot pad technology complete the design.
For Rega tonearms
The Nd9 uses Rega's three-point mounting exclusively, so it is intended for Rega tonearms. It is available factory-fitted to the Planar 8, at a lower price than buying it separately, and Rega also recommends it for the Planar 3 RS Edition and Planar 6. With an output of 5 to 6 mV it works with any MM phono stage, such as the Fono MM MK5.
Awards, rebuild and warranty
The Nd9 has been recognised by Hi-Fi Choice, The Ear (Editor's Choice), AVForums (Best Buy) and Audiograde. Through the Rega rebuild scheme, a worn cartridge can be rebuilt with a new cantilever, stylus and pivot pad at a reduced price. It is covered by Rega's Lifetime Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects.
Boron cantilever
The element that makes the Nd9 unique in the series is its cantilever. Instead of the aluminium used in the Nd3, Nd5 and Nd7, Rega uses boron, one of the stiffest and lightest materials that can be used in a cartridge, with technology derived directly from the Aphelion 2, the company's flagship moving coil cartridge.
Why boron
There is solid engineering logic behind it. The cantilever is the tiny arm that carries the movements of the stylus to the magnet. For nothing to be lost along the way, it must be as light as possible and at the same time very stiff, so that it does not flex or resonate. Boron offers a rare combination of these properties, with exceptionally fast response. This means the finest and fastest movements of the stylus reach the generator intact, without delay and without any added colouration, preserving the integrity of the original recording.
Tracking precision
At the tip of the boron cantilever sits a fine line nude diamond stylus. The combination of a light, stiff cantilever and an advanced stylus profile delivers exceptional tracking accuracy, low distortion and clean, open treble. Instrumental transients are reproduced with speed and naturalness, while micro-dynamics, the small differences in level that bring a performance to life, become noticeably more distinct. The recommended tracking force is 1.75 g, a value that balances secure tracking with gentle treatment of your records.
A master of detail
The Nd9 is not simply an Nd7 with a different cantilever. Rega also refined the generator so it can make full use of the extra information read by the boron cantilever and fine line stylus. Every cartridge is assembled by hand by skilled technicians, with the precision an instrument of this class demands.
Fine line stylus
It all starts at the point of contact. The stylus has a radius of 3 μm in the horizontal plane and 30 μm in the vertical, a profile that approaches the shape of the cutting head used to make the record. The larger contact area with the groove walls allows fuller retrieval of detail and better high-frequency reproduction, while reducing distortion, especially in the inner grooves. At the same time, tracking force is spread over a larger area, which benefits both the stylus and your records over many years of playing.
A refined generator
The generator completes the chain. The Nd9 features a new generator geometry with an optimised pole gap and miniaturised parallel coils of 1275 turns. The N55 neodymium magnet, the strongest commercially available, increases signal strength compared with conventional magnets and allows low moving mass. The result is a wide, deep soundstage, good channel balance and a level of resolution that brings the Nd9 very close to the performance of moving coil cartridges, while retaining a high output of 5 to 6 mV that any MM phono stage can handle with ease.
Designed for Rega tonearms
The Nd9 has been designed exclusively for Rega tonearms. This choice allows the company to optimise the connection between cartridge and arm without the compromises imposed by a standard mounting, and to ensure that every Nd9 performs exactly as its engineers intended, on every turntable it is fitted to.
3-point mounting and PPS body
The mechanical construction supports the performance. Rega's three-point mounting forms an exceptionally rigid connection between cartridge and tonearm. Vibrations generated while reading the groove are quickly drained away from the stylus, rather than returning to add distortion. The glass-filled PPS body is light and rigid, limiting resonances and reducing stress on the tonearm bearings. Rega's pivot pad technology contributes to the stable, precise operation of the moving system, so the cartridge maintains its performance over a long service life.
The ideal partnership
The choice of turntable completes the system. The Nd9 is available factory-fitted to the Planar 8, one of Rega's most advanced turntables, at a lower price than buying it separately. Rega also recommends it for the Planar 3 RS Edition and Planar 6, where it represents a significant and very audible upgrade. A quality MM phono stage such as the Fono MM MK5 is all that is needed, with no requirement for a dedicated MC stage. The amber window marks out the Nd9 as the flagship of the Nd range.
