MM cartridge with nude elliptical stylus and neodymium magnet
A step up in the Nd series
The Nd5 is a hand-built stereo moving magnet (MM) cartridge, made in England, that sits above the Nd3 in Rega's new range. It shares the series' core technology, namely the N55 neodymium magnet, PPS body and three-point mounting, but adds a nude elliptical diamond stylus. Rega reports improved linearity, a wider soundstage and better high-frequency response compared with its previous MM cartridges.
Factory-fitted option
The Nd5 is available factory-fitted to the Planar 3 and Planar 6 turntables, at a lower price than buying it separately, and is the cartridge of the Planar 3 RS Edition. With an output of 5 to 6 mV it works with any MM phono stage, from the Fono Mini A2D MK2 and Fono MM MK5 to the phono stages of the Elex and Elicit amplifiers.
Reviews, rebuild and warranty
The Nd5 has earned a Best Buy from The Ear and a Recommended award from Hi-Fi Choice. Through the Rega rebuild scheme, a worn cartridge can be rebuilt with a new cantilever, stylus and pivot pad at a reduced price. It is covered by Rega's Lifetime Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects.
Nude elliptical stylus
The main difference between the Nd5 and the Nd3 lies at the point where it touches the record. Instead of a stylus bonded to a metal shank, the Nd5 uses a nude diamond with a perfect elliptical profile, a solution usually found on more expensive cartridges and one that directly affects resolution and clarity.
What nude means
The difference is microscopic in size but large in effect. In a bonded stylus, a small diamond is fixed to a metal base, which adds mass to the tip of the cantilever. In a nude stylus, the entire element is cut from a single piece of diamond and fixed directly to the cantilever. Lower mass at the tip means the stylus reacts faster to abrupt changes in the groove and tracks fine detail more accurately, especially at high frequencies and in fast musical passages where a heavier stylus can struggle to keep up.
Tracking accuracy
The shape of the diamond matters too. The elliptical profile contacts the groove walls over a narrow, elongated area that more closely resembles the shape of the cutting head that made the record. The result is more faithful tracking, lower distortion towards the inner grooves and more information retrieved from every recording. Combined with a light aluminium cantilever, the Nd5 delivers clean treble, an open midrange and controlled bass, at a recommended tracking force of 1.75 g, and it sounds just as composed at the end of a side as at the start.
Advanced moving magnet
For the Nd series, Rega reconsidered from the ground up how a moving magnet cartridge turns movement into an electrical signal. Development took around ten years of research, and the result is a generator that combines the practicality of an MM cartridge with qualities that until recently were the preserve of far more expensive moving coil designs.
N55 magnet
Everything starts with the magnet. At the centre of the Nd5 is an N55 neodymium magnet, the strongest commercially available and typically used in MC cartridges. Thanks to its great strength, the magnet can be smaller and lighter, reducing overall moving mass. The stylus moves more freely, while the cartridge still delivers a healthy output of 5 to 6 mV, enough for any MM phono stage with no need for additional gain, a dedicated MC stage or a step-up transformer.
Parallel coils
The coils are just as carefully engineered. Every Nd5 is assembled by hand by skilled technicians. Its miniaturised parallel coils have 1275 turns of 38-micron wire, giving low inductance and low impedance. In practice this means the cartridge does not roll off the high frequencies, as often happens with MM cartridges using larger coils, and that its performance is less affected by cabling and the phono stage. An optimised pole gap provides good channel balance and separation, for a wide and stable stereo soundstage in which every instrument has its own place.
PPS body and 3-point mounting
The design of the Nd5 does not stop at the generator and stylus. The cartridge body and its connection to the tonearm are just as important, because they determine how the cartridge deals with the vibrations created as it reads the groove, and therefore how clean the final signal will be when it reaches your phono stage.
Light and rigid
The body material was chosen with care. The body is made from glass-filled PPS, an engineering material that offers high rigidity at very low weight. Its rigidity limits resonances that could colour the sound, while a weight of 6 g reduces stress on the tonearm bearings. The tonearm can therefore move freely and guide the cartridge accurately, from the first groove to the last. The clear smoked window gives the Nd5 its own discreet identity within the range, distinguishing it at a glance from its siblings.
A rigid link to the tonearm
The fixing method completes the picture. Rega's three-point mounting creates a stable, rigid connection between cartridge and tonearm. Vibrations are drained quickly away from the stylus and channelled through the arm, rather than returning to the cartridge to add distortion and smear detail. Fitting to a Rega tonearm is quick and simple, with correct alignment achieved almost automatically. Rega recommends the Nd5 for the Planar 3 and Planar 6, where it is used to its full potential and forms a superbly balanced partnership.
