The iconic Planar 3 in its most advanced form
Rega Special: the Planar 3 without compromise
The Planar 3 RS Edition (Rega Special) is the upgraded version of Rega's best-known turntable. It keeps the dimensions and minimalist philosophy of the Planar 3, but adopts solutions previously reserved for the Planar 6, 8 and 10: an HPL laminate plinth with a brushed aluminium skin, a separate Neo PSU MK2 power supply, a Reference EBLT belt and a factory-fitted Nd5 cartridge. It is hand-built in England.
Design and finish
The dark brushed metallic aluminium surface is framed by high-gloss black edging, giving the RS a more premium look than the classic Planar 3. The dust cover is smoked, while the 12 mm Optiwhite float glass platter with a polished edge acts as a flywheel for stable rotation. The main hub uses a patented brass bearing with an improved fit.
Ready to play
Tonearm and cartridge arrive factory-aligned, so setup takes only a few minutes. You will need an MM phono stage or an amplifier with an MM input, such as the Rega Fono MM MK5, Elex MK4 or Elicit MK5. Among other awards, the Planar 3 RS was named What Hi-Fi? Product of the Year 2025.
HPL plinth and Double Brace
The biggest change compared with the classic Planar 3 is in the base. For the first time at this level, Rega uses a High Pressure Laminate (HPL) plinth, the material it previously reserved for the Planar 6, 8 and 10, and calls it the stiffest plinth it has ever made for a Planar 3.
Light yet rigid
Rega's philosophy remains the same: a low-mass base stores less energy, so fewer vibrations find their way back to the stylus. The same logic runs through the entire Planar range, from the Planar 1 to the Naia, and it is why Rega turntables weigh less than many of their rivals. The HPL with its brushed aluminium skin increases stiffness without adding unnecessary weight. The result is a cleaner background, a more stable stereo image and better-controlled bass.
The stressed beam principle
A double brace sits between the tonearm mount and the main hub bearing: a 3 mm phenolic bottom brace and a phenolic top brace with a metallised skin. Together they form a stressed beam structure exactly where the two most critical parts of the turntable meet. Instead of a heavy full-size skin, Rega uses double-thickness material only where it is needed. This limits energy absorption and unwanted resonance, while motor and bearing noise struggle to reach the record. The approach is the same one that underpins Rega's more expensive Planar models, scaled to the footprint of the Planar 3, and it is a large part of why reviewers hear a clear step up over the standard model.
Neo PSU MK2 and Reference EBLT
Speed accuracy is fundamental to pitch and timing. That is why the Planar 3 RS comes with the separate Neo PSU MK2 power supply, custom-matched to the motor of each individual unit.
Digital precision, analogue result
The Neo PSU MK2 uses a DSP generator that derives the exact frequency from a crystal reference and drives the motor with a sine wave. Switching between 33⅓ and 45 rpm is electronic, at the touch of a button, with no need to move the belt, and the user can fine-tune the speed in 0.01 rpm steps, so the platter turns at exactly the right rate. The motor anti-vibration circuit is hand-tuned for each motor individually, lowering noise and improving rotational stability. Adjustment is made from the rear panel with the tool supplied with the power supply, and can be checked with Rega's optional Strobe Kit.
Motor, pulley and belt
The low-voltage, low-noise 24 V motor has an integrated PCB and drives the sub-platter through a CNC-machined aluminium pulley. Drive is transferred by Rega's Reference EBLT belt, which is manufactured with great precision so that it is perfectly round and consistent. Combined with the 12 mm glass platter acting as a flywheel, the system delivers steady speed, cleaner notes and a more rhythmic presentation. On a standard Planar 3 the power supply and the belt are bought as separate upgrades; here both are already in the box, matched to the motor at the factory.
RB330 tonearm and Nd5 cartridge
Rega makes its own tonearms and cartridges, something rare in this category. On the Planar 3 RS, the RB330 tonearm and Nd5 cartridge arrive assembled and aligned at the factory as a single, proven package.
RB330: decades of experience
The RB330 was designed with 3D CAD/CAM and draws on more than 40 years of Rega tonearm development. The vertical bearing housing and arm tube use redistributed mass to reduce resonance points. High-precision bearings provide almost zero friction and zero play, and every arm is assembled by hand. With an effective mass of 11 g it suits a wide range of cartridges, should you ever decide to upgrade. The low-capacitance phono cable is also made by Rega.
Nd5: neodymium power
The Nd5 is a hand-built moving magnet cartridge with a nude elliptical stylus made from polycrystalline diamond. Its new generator geometry and optimised pole gap improve channel balance, linearity and crosstalk for a wider soundstage. Miniaturised coils with 1,275 turns of 38-micron wire offer low inductance and better high-frequency response. With an output of 5–6 mV it works with any standard MM phono input. A tracking force of 1.75 g is set at the factory, so the turntable is ready to play straight out of the box with no alignment tools needed. The cartridge packaging is 100% recyclable. Hi-Fi Choice described the Nd5 as one of the best cartridge designs available at its price, which makes it a strong match for this turntable.
