Award-winning MM phono stage with a fully discrete circuit
Rega's dedicated MM phono stage
The Fono MM MK5 is Rega's dedicated phono stage for moving magnet (MM) cartridges and is made in England. It is designed to get the very best from any MM cartridge, from the Carbon to the cartridges of the Nd series, and is the natural partner for the Planar 1 Plus, Planar 2, Planar 3, Planar 6 and Planar 8 turntables. It follows a line of phono stages that have won successive What Hi-Fi? Awards since 2017, most recently Best Phono Stage under £400 for 2026.
Simple connection, clean operation
There are no confusing switches or loading settings: the Fono MM MK5 loads the cartridge with the established value of 47 kΩ and 100 pF and is ready to play as soon as it is connected. It is powered by an external 24 V AC supply, keeping the transformer well away from the sensitive gain circuitry.
Warranty
It is covered by Rega's Lifetime Limited Warranty against confirmed manufacturing defects, under the terms of the country of purchase.
Fully discrete input
The heart of the Fono MM MK5 is its input stage. Instead of an off-the-shelf integrated circuit, Rega uses a fully discrete cascaded complementary design, built specifically for the very small signal a moving magnet cartridge produces. It takes more design time and more careful component selection, but it gives the engineers complete control over how the circuit behaves, from noise to linearity.
Why it matters
An MM cartridge delivers a signal of only a few millivolts, which must be amplified around a hundred times without adding noise or distortion. Any imperfection in the first stage is multiplied through the rest of the chain. With 41.4 dB of gain at 1 kHz and an input sensitivity of 1.7 mV for 200 mV output, the Fono MM MK5 suits most MM cartridges on the market, while a maximum input level of 60 mV ensures generous headroom on loud peaks. A 200 Ω output impedance allows connection to almost any amplifier, with a recommended minimum load of 5 kΩ.
Energy and control
The result is a sound with timing, dynamics and clarity, the hallmarks of Rega's design philosophy. Bass has weight and control, voices sound natural and the stereo image unfolds with stability. What Hi-Fi? concluded that Rega has once again succeeded in all it set out to do, and has repeatedly named it one of the best phono stages in its class, year after year. It brings out the musicality of any MM cartridge without adding a colour of its own.
Two-stage RIAA
Every vinyl record is cut with reduced bass and boosted treble, following the RIAA curve. A phono stage must reverse this curve precisely so the music returns to its original balance. In the Fono MM MK5, Rega revisited this critical part of the design to make it even more accurate and the music even more natural.
Fewer interactions
This is one of the most significant changes compared with earlier generations. RIAA equalisation is now split across two separate stages. This reduces interaction between the parts of the curve that deal with low and high frequencies, and allows each stage to be optimised independently. RIAA accuracy is better than ±0.2 dB from 100 Hz to 100 kHz, while frequency response extends from 15 Hz to 100 kHz. For the listener, in practice, this means correct tonal balance, with no artificial bloom in the bass and no hardness in the treble, whatever kind of music you play.
Carefully chosen capacitors
Small details like these separate a good phono stage from a great one. Component quality matters as much as topology. Rega uses polyester capacitors in the signal path and polypropylene capacitors in the RIAA circuit, where the stability and precision of each value directly affect the equalisation curve. This combination ensures the Fono MM MK5 will keep its character and accuracy for many years of listening, long after the first time you connect it, even with daily use.
The perfect partner
For Rega, appearance and electrical performance were equally important in the Fono MM MK5. The result is a phono stage that matches the Planar turntables and the rest of the company's components both visually and technically, so it belongs in any Rega system.
A unified look
Design consistency is a Rega trademark. The Fono MM MK5 shares the same aluminium enclosure as the Fono MC MK4 and the Neo PSU MK2 turntable power supply. A Planar 3 or Planar 6 with a Neo PSU MK2 and a Fono MM MK5 therefore forms a visually coherent set on the shelf. The metal case is not just about looks, as it also shields the sensitive circuitry from electromagnetic interference. At 17.8 x 14.0 x 4.5 cm, it fits comfortably next to or beneath the turntable. The clean front panel follows Rega design language, with nothing superfluous.
For every Planar with an MM cartridge
Its versatility is one of its greatest strengths. Rega recommends the Fono MM MK5 for the Planar 1 Plus, Planar 2, Planar 3, Planar 6 and Planar 8, and as a key partner for the Nd series cartridges, from the Nd3 up to the flagship Nd9. It is also a meaningful and sensibly priced upgrade for any system whose amplifier has a basic built-in phono stage or no phono input at all. It comes with the Rega PS1 power supply and is covered by Rega's lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, so you can enjoy your records with peace of mind for many years.
