Compact MM phono stage with USB output for digitising vinyl

The most accessible way into the Rega sound

The Fono Mini A2D MK2 is Rega's smallest phono stage and one of the company's most popular products. Made in England, it accepts any moving magnet (MM) cartridge, from the Rega Carbon fitted to the Planar 1 and Planar 2 up to the cartridges of the Nd series. Its circuit is derived from the larger Fono MM, which is why it delivers a sound that clearly outperforms its size and price point.

For systems without a phono input

Many modern amplifiers, active speakers and streaming systems no longer include a phono input. The Fono Mini A2D MK2 solves this in the simplest possible way: connect the turntable to its input and its output to any line-level input. At just 10.2 cm wide it sits next to the turntable or behind the amplifier, while 24 V AC power comes from an external supply.

Warranty and support

Like all Rega electronics, it is covered by the manufacturer's Lifetime Limited Warranty against confirmed manufacturing defects, under the terms that apply in the country of purchase.

From vinyl to digital

The A2D in the name stands for Analogue to Digital. Beyond its role as a phono stage, the Fono Mini A2D MK2 also acts as a bridge between your record collection and your computer, so you can keep digital copies of your favourite albums. There is no need for a separate sound card or external converter: the same stage that amplifies and RIAA-equalises the cartridge signal also converts it into digital form.

Recording over USB

The USB output sends the turntable signal straight to the computer at 16-bit resolution and a 44.1 kHz sample rate, with support for up to 48 kHz. That is CD standard, ideal for archiving rare pressings, creating files to play on your phone or in the car, and preserving records that are no longer available in digital form. Recording is done with the audio recording software of your choice.

The right level for a clean recording

Every cartridge and every record plays at a different level. That is why Rega added a front-panel Level control that adjusts the gain of the digital output. It helps you avoid both distortion from overload and recordings that are far too quiet. Full digital scale is reached with an input signal of 7.5 mV. At the same time the analogue output stays active, so you can listen to the record through your hi-fi system while it is being recorded. It is a simple, reliable process that turns an ordinary listening session into building your own personal digital archive.

Fono MM DNA

Despite its small size, the Fono Mini A2D MK2 is not a mere connection accessory. Its circuit comes from the Fono MM, Rega's award-winning MM phono stage, and follows the same philosophy: a few carefully chosen stages and a clean signal path. The result is a phono stage that respects the music and delivers the Rega character right from the first stage of a system.

Timing and dynamics

Its sound is defined by accurate timing and energy, qualities that reviewers have consistently recognised over the years. What Hi-Fi? awarded it five stars, noting that timing has always been one of its defining talents. Bass is controlled, voices sound natural and noise stays low, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 78 dBA. Even in quiet passages the background stays clean, revealing the small details of the performance and the atmosphere of the recording.

Correctly matched to the cartridge

A cartridge performs only as well as the load it sees allows, so matching matters. The input loads the cartridge with 47 kΩ and 100 pF, the established value for moving magnet designs. Input sensitivity of 5 mV for 500 mV output suits typical cartridges such as the Rega Carbon, while the maximum input level of 70 mV at 1 kHz leaves generous headroom for dynamic peaks. A low 100 Ω output impedance allows it to drive almost any amplifier or active speaker without losses or tonal changes, so it can be placed wherever it is most convenient in your system.

The natural partner for a Planar

Rega recommends the Fono Mini A2D MK2 as a natural match for the Planar 1 Plus, Planar 2 and Planar 3 turntables, as well as for the Carbon cartridge. It is the simplest way to build a complete, high-quality vinyl system without complicated adjustments. Pairing turntable, cartridge and phono stage from the same manufacturer ensures every element has been designed and tested to work together in harmony.

An upgrade that makes sense

If your amplifier already has a built-in phono stage, the Fono Mini A2D MK2 is often a clear improvement, since many built-in stages are an afterthought in the amplifier's design. If your amplifier or active speakers have no phono input at all, the Fono Mini A2D MK2 makes it possible to connect a turntable without compromising the sound. It is also a smart choice for a second system, a home office or a bedroom, where space is limited but sound quality remains a clear priority for the listener.

Set up in minutes

Simplicity is part of the Rega philosophy. There are no menus and no loading adjustments: connect the turntable lead and earth wire, the output to your amplifier and the power supply, and you are ready to drop the needle on your first record. Measuring 10.2 x 3.0 x 12.5 cm, it can sit discreetly on a shelf, while manufacture in England and the manufacturer's lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects give peace of mind for many years of trouble-free use.
