Double Brace technology
Rega is one of the pioneers of lightweight, rigid turntable construction. The reasoning is that unnecessary mass stores energy and passes it, together with motor and bearing noise, into the spinning record. The Planar 3 takes this philosophy a step further, with a complete bracing system at the most critical points of the plinth.
A stressed beam between tonearm and bearing
The plinth is lightweight, finished in high-gloss acrylic, and reinforced with a double bracing system (Double Brace) exactly along the line that joins the tonearm mount to the main bearing. The two braces, one on top and one underneath, form a rigid stressed-beam structure that keeps tonearm and record in a perfectly stable relationship. This avoids the energy absorption and resonances that could colour the sound or cause audible distortion, and it keeps motor and bearing noise away from the stylus.
Thicker, stiffer bracing
In the latest generation the lower phenolic resin brace has become thicker, at 3 mm, while the upper brace gains a metallised finish that further increases rigidity. Using braces rather than a full skin allows double-thickness phenolic resin only where it is needed, while reducing overall weight. The power switch has been moved to a new, more ergonomic position, so it falls naturally to hand. The audible result is a cleaner background, a steadier stereo image and better-controlled bass. A dust cover is included as standard, and Rega offers optional lid and plinth protectors that keep the gloss finish free of marks.
RB330 tonearm
The RB330 is a precision tonearm designed with modern 3D CAD/CAM tools, building on more than 35 years of Rega tonearm development. It is hand assembled in England and is regarded as one of the most complete arms in its class, capable of bringing out the best in cartridges well above the turntable's own price.
New bearing housing and a resonance-free tube
The bearing housing is new, while the arm tube, a high-pressure die-cast alloy, has been redesigned with a mass distribution that minimises resonance points. Rega's high-precision bearings offer almost frictionless movement, so the stylus can track even the finest information in the groove with stability. The result is excellent stability during playback, precision and a high level of detail, with a clear, transparent sound when paired with a good cartridge.
Wiring and connections
The internal wiring is hand made from low-capacitance cable and terminates in high-quality Neutrik connectors, carrying the cartridge signal to the phono stage without loss. The arm features integrated bias, an adjustable counterweight, a cueing lever, an arm clip and a three-point cartridge mount compatible with Rega's Nd, Elys and Ania cartridges as well as those of other makers. When the time comes to upgrade the cartridge, the RB330 is one of the reasons the Planar 3 can stay with its owner for many years without the need to change turntable. It is also sold separately as a standalone tonearm, a measure of the respect it commands among vinyl enthusiasts.
24 V motor, bearing & glass platter
Stable rotation is a prerequisite for correct pitch and natural timing. On the Planar 3 Rega redesigned the entire drive path, from motor and bearing to sub-platter and glass platter, keeping very few parts from its predecessor.
24 V motor, ready for the Neo PSU
The low-noise, low-vibration 24 V motor is controlled by an updated circuit board that improves the anti-vibration circuit and supports the optional Rega Neo PSU MK2 via a Mini DIN socket. With the Neo PSU, switching between 33⅓ and 45 rpm becomes electronic and speed stability rises further still. Without it, speed is changed by hand by moving the belt. The advanced EBLT belt has been standard since March 2021, and the motor cover tray has integrated cooling.
Brass bearing, sub-platter and 12 mm Optiwhite platter
The brass main bearing has been redesigned for better fit and construction, so it is subject to less stress during rotation. The sub-platter is now more accurate and stiffer. On top sits a 12 mm Optiwhite float glass platter with a polished edge and improved manufacturing accuracy. New feet improve stability and reduce the transfer of vibration from the furniture beneath. Rega recommends a rigid, level surface or its own wall bracket, which is compatible with the Planar 1, 2, 3 and 6. For those who want to go further, the Neo PSU MK2 remains the most effective single upgrade, adding precise electronic speed control and lower motor vibration.
