Reference turntable with ceramic bracing, RB3000 tonearm and PL10 power supply
Inspired by the Naiad
The Planar 10 belongs to Rega's Reference series and is inspired by the Naiad, the company's laboratory turntable. According to Rega it is the first production turntable to use ceramic bracing, which provides an exceptionally rigid mount for the RB3000 tonearm and the custom main bearing. This version comes in matt Polaris grey, with the PL10 PSU power supply, and is supplied without a cartridge. It is hand-built in England.
Main bearing and dust cover
The low-mass sub-platter is machined from aluminium and carries a hardened tool steel spindle running in a custom brass housing. The assembly is mounted so as to limit the energy stored in the plinth. As on the Planar 8, the outer frame has been dropped in favour of a single-piece removable dust cover, for even lower weight.
Cartridge and system
The Planar 10 pairs ideally with Rega's Apheta 3 or Aphelion 2 moving coil cartridges and a phono stage such as the Aura MC. Rega recommends amplifiers such as the Aethos and Osiris. It has received accolades from Stereophile, Hi-Fi Choice (Editor's Choice), Hi-Fi World (Best Turntable 2020) and What Hi-Fi? (5 stars).
Skeletal plinth with ceramic bracing
The Planar 10 plinth is the most extreme application of Rega's low-mass philosophy in the Planar range. Any material that is not essential is removed, so there is no mass to store energy and return it to the stylus.
Tancast 8 and HPL
The core is Tancast 8 polyurethane foam sandwiched between two layers of High Pressure Laminate. The plinth is 30% lighter than that of the RP10 and at the same time more rigid. The skeletal shape, which follows the outline of the tonearm and platter, further reduces mass and the surface area that can resonate.
Ceramic DB bracing
Double Brace technology here gains a ceramic top brace, combined with a phenolic bottom brace. Together they form a stressed beam between the tonearm mount and the main bearing. The ceramic material is exceptionally stiff for its weight, so the critical section linking the stylus to the record spindle becomes almost immovable without adding overall mass.
The result
Less stored energy means fewer unwanted resonances and a cleaner background from which the fine detail of a recording can emerge. Stereophile described the Planar 10 as detailed, very quiet and extremely precise, with solid stereo image focus, while The Ear called it a significant step up from the Planar 8.
Finish
The matt Polaris grey HPL surface is durable and understated, while the single-piece smoked dust cover follows the clean, skeletal outline of the turntable without a heavy outer frame. It is a design that puts performance first, with nothing added for show.
RB3000 tonearm
The RB3000 succeeds the RB2000 and is one of the most advanced tonearms Rega has ever made. Every unit is assembled by hand by the company's technicians.
Bearings matched one by one
Bearings are individually selected to fit precisely with the spindle they will work with. The preloaded bearing is adjusted to a tolerance of less than one thousandth of a millimetre, for almost friction-free movement with no play. This lets the stylus follow the finest groove modulations, resulting in more detail.
Fewer joints, no adhesive
The RB3000 structure has very few mechanical joints and uses no adhesive at all, so there are no points that absorb or store energy. The low-mass vertical bearing improves stiffness and reduces friction, while the redesigned aluminium arm tube uses redistributed mass for greater rigidity.
Hand-finished
The arm tube is polished by hand and left unpainted. The arm has an integrated anti-skating mechanism, a cueing lever, an arm clip and 3-point cartridge fixing. Its 11 g effective mass and Rega's standard geometry allow it to work with top moving coil cartridges such as the Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2, both of which Rega offers as factory-fitted options on the Planar 10.
Wiring
The internal wiring is fitted by hand, and the aluminium arm tube is cast under very high pressure for outstanding rigidity. Together with the matched bearings, this gives the RB3000 its precise, stable tracking.
Ceramic platter and PL10 PSU
The heart of the music, as Rega puts it, is the combination of an exceptionally accurate platter with a motor that turns with absolute stability.
Diamond-cut ceramic oxide
The platter is made from ceramic oxide powder that is compressed, fired and diamond-machined for perfect flatness. Its shape provides a flywheel effect, while improved coupling to the sub-platter ensures accuracy and stable speed. The particular stiffness of ceramic contributes to a clean, controlled presentation with deep, well-defined bass.
Motor and belt
The 24 V low-noise synchronous motor is mounted from below, a method taken from the Naiad, and hand-tuned to its own PL10 power supply. The EBLT belt uses a special rubber compound that Rega developed over three years and is produced on precision tooling so that it is round and dimensionally accurate.
PL10 power supply
The PL10 PSU, in its own custom case, uses a DSP generator based on a crystal reference to drive the motor. It reduces motor vibration and offers electronic switching between 33⅓ and 45 rpm, as well as user fine speed adjustment. The separate box keeps the power supply and its interference away from the turntable, and Diapason called the Planar 10 one of the best turntables it had heard at any price.
Power supply size
The PL10 PSU measures 21.8 x 8 x 32 cm and weighs 3 kg, so it fits easily next to the turntable or on another shelf of the system rack.
