Hand-built reference tonearm for the Planar 10
Where tonearm design reaches its limits
The Rega RB3000 is a reference tonearm with new features that, according to Rega, push the boundaries of tonearm design. Every unit is built entirely by hand by skilled technicians. The improved bearings are selected one by one to match their spindle on both inside and outside diameter, a method that recovers more detail from the record surface.
Its place in the range
The RB3000 is the tonearm supplied with the Planar 10, Rega's reference turntable, and its new vertical bearing assembly was designed specifically for it. As an upgrade, it fits any turntable with a Rega-type mounting hole and is the final step before the RB Titanium.
Recommended cartridges
Rega recommends the RB3000 with its moving coil cartridges: the Aphelion 2, Apheta 3, Ania Pro and Ania. With the Aphelion 2 and the Aura MC phono stage it forms the company's reference replay system. The cartridge is sold separately.
Hand-matched bearings
The most critical part of any tonearm is its bearings, and in the RB3000 Rega treats them with a method reminiscent of watchmaking. Each bearing is selected by hand to match its own spindle, a level of care rarely found even among the most expensive tonearms.
An interference fit
The inside and outside diameters of each bearing are measured and matched to the spindle to achieve an interference fit. This leaves no gap where play could appear, while movement remains almost frictionless both horizontally and vertically.
The bearings are zero-tolerance chrome steel, matched in pairs. It is a time-consuming process that cannot be carried out on a mass-production line, and it is one of the reasons each RB3000 is built entirely by hand.
What it means for the sound
The groove modulations that carry high frequencies are measured in microns. When the arm has no free play at all, the stylus reads these modulations without blurring them with random movements of its own.
The result, according to Rega, is more detail from the record surface, a more stable stereo image and a cleaner background, where even the faintest information emerges naturally.
In a reference system, this difference is exactly what separates a very good tonearm from an exceptional one.
It is also why the RB3000 reveals so clearly the differences between high-resolution cartridges such as the Apheta 3 and the Aphelion 2, letting each show its own character.
No adhesives, minimal joints
The RB3000's structure is designed with as few mechanical joints as possible and with the stiffest materials in the critical areas. Tolerances are so tight that no adhesive at all is used in its construction.
Why the absence of glue matters
Adhesives are elastic materials. In a tonearm, every glued joint becomes a point where the stylus's energy can be absorbed unevenly or stored and released as colouration. Their properties also change with temperature and time.
In the RB3000 the parts are fitted together to such precise tolerances that they are held mechanically, with no intermediate materials. The arm therefore behaves as a single rigid body, transferring energy cleanly and consistently from the stylus to the bearings.
Stiffness where it counts
Rega chooses the stiffest materials where the greatest forces act, mainly in the bearing assembly and the connection to the base. The energy produced during playback is led quickly to the plinth instead of oscillating within the arm.
Three-point mounting completes this philosophy, connecting the arm to the plinth through stable points of contact.
The result is a tonearm whose geometry stays unchanged, even with the most demanding cartridges.
For the listener this translates into sound with stable focus, clean outlines and bass that starts and stops precisely, without overhang.
The same philosophy of minimal joints and maximum stiffness is applied to Rega's turntables, so the RB3000 works with the plinth as a natural extension of it.
Designed for the Planar 10
The RB3000 was developed alongside the Planar 10, Rega's reference turntable. Its new low-mass vertical bearing assembly was designed specifically to complement it, so that arm and turntable work together as one carefully matched system.
The award-winning tube, hand-polished
The arm uses Rega's award-winning tube, hand-polished to minimise mass. The tube has been redesigned to distribute its mass better and to reduce stress and resonance.
This change increases stiffness and reduces strain on the bearings, so that movement stays stable and smooth throughout the whole side of a record, from the lead-in groove to the run-out.
Completing the system
The RB3000 has a tungsten counterweight and a flexible high-end phono cable. Tungsten, a very dense metal, allows a smaller, more compact counterweight close to the pivot point.
Combined with the Planar 10, the Aphelion 2 cartridge and the Aura MC phono stage, the RB3000 forms part of the most complete analogue system Rega makes.
It fits equally well on other Rega turntables, giving direct access to the company's reference technology.
For the owner of a Planar 8 or Planar 6, upgrading to the RB3000 is a way of approaching the level of the Planar 10 without changing turntable.
Every RB3000 comes with a detailed manual covering all mounting and set-up data, so installation by a specialist dealer is straightforward.
