Rega's legendary tonearm, redesigned

The evolution of a legend

The Rega RB330 was designed with 3D CAD/CAM and draws on more than 35 years of Rega tonearm experience. The latest version improves ergonomics, usability and sound: a new bias assembly, a stiffer vertical bearing housing, an integrated arm clip, a spring housing with clearer markings, a new low-capacitance phono cable and a redesigned 100 g counterweight.

Where you'll find it

The RB330 is the tonearm fitted to Rega's Planar 3 and Planar 6. As an upgrade it suits turntables with a Rega-type mounting hole and is one of the most worthwhile steps for older models from the company. It is a right-handed 9-inch arm with a cueing lever and adjustable counterweight.

Working with cartridges

With an effective mass of 11 g, the RB330 works superbly with the Nd series MM cartridges and with the Ania, Ania Pro and Apheta 3 MC cartridges. Paired with a phono stage such as the Fono Mini A2D, it completes a system with a clean, lively presentation. The cartridge is sold separately.

Stiffer housing, new arm tube

At the heart of the new RB330 are two parts redesigned from scratch with 3D CAD/CAM tools: the vertical bearing housing and the arm tube. Both changes aim at the same goal of greater stability with lower friction.

More stiffness where it matters

The vertical bearing housing is where the arm pivots up and down as it follows the groove. Any flexibility at this point translates into lost information. Rega made it stiffer, so that the arm keeps its geometry stable and the energy from the stylus reaches the base without unwanted oscillation.

The increased stiffness, together with lower friction, brings a noticeable improvement in clarity and precision, whatever cartridge is used. Tracking becomes more secure and the stereo image more stable and better defined.

Redistributed mass

The new arm tube is designed so that its mass is distributed in a way that reduces resonance points. Instead of energy building up at particular frequencies, vibration is spread evenly along the arm.

It remains a low-mass arm, with an effective mass of 11 g, and keeps the characteristic speed and liveliness that made Rega tonearms a reference. Rega argues that the arm's low friction and high stability allow more detail to be recovered from records, with a cleaner background and better-defined bass.

That is why many regard the RB330 as the tonearm offering the best balance of performance and price in Rega's range.

Bearings with zero play

For Rega, the quality of a tonearm is judged first by its bearings. The RB330 uses lower-friction precision bearings, selected by hand, for almost free movement in every direction.

Why small things matter

The groove modulations that correspond to high frequencies measure just a few tens of microns. If an arm's bearings have play of even a few microns, that random movement is enough to mask part of the musical information and blur the image.

Rega has invested for more than thirty years in equipment and methods that eliminate this play, and the RB330 comes with a full technical analysis of the subject in its documentation, explaining why the company treats it as fundamental.

Assembled by hand

Every RB330 is assembled and adjusted by hand, with parts selected to match each other. The result is an arm that moves almost without friction, yet without any measurable free play.

The stylus therefore follows the groove without meeting resistance and without wandering inside it. The listener perceives this as a more stable soundstage, cleaner outlines and greater calm in the background of the music, with low-level detail emerging naturally.

It is the same philosophy Rega applies to its more expensive RB880 and RB3000 tonearms, brought to a far more accessible level.

For the owner of a Planar 3 or Planar 6, it means the arm will not be the limiting link in the chain, even when the cartridge is upgraded to an MC.

Ergonomics and cable

The new RB330 is not only about sound. Rega also improved the points the user comes into contact with every day, so that set-up and use are easier and more precise, and so that the arm's performance is easy to get right at home.

Easier set-up

The new bias assembly and the spring housing with clearer markings make anti-skating adjustment simpler and more repeatable. The integrated clip holds the arm securely when not in use, while the redesigned 100 g mild steel counterweight allows precise setting of tracking force.

Together with three-point mounting, the RB330 installs and adjusts quickly, both on a new turntable and as an upgrade to an existing one, and the user manual covers every step clearly for owners setting it up for the first time.

A clean signal path

The arm comes with a new low-capacitance phono cable made by Rega itself, with high-quality Neutrik plugs. The cable's low capacitance and low resistance protect the cartridge's delicate signal from losses at high frequencies.

The wiring inside the arm is done by hand. This keeps the path from stylus to phono stage as clean as possible, which especially benefits low-output moving coil cartridges such as the Ania and Apheta 3.

The difference is heard as more open high frequencies and a quieter background.

Rega suggests the Fono Mini A2D phono stage as a natural partner, which also adds a USB output for digitising your records.
