The third generation of Rega's high-end MC cartridge

Fifteen years of development

Rega has refined its moving coil cartridges for more than fifteen years, using undamped micro-mass generators and jointless bodies. The Apheta 2 was a great success and the Apheta 3 builds on it, borrowing from the flagship Aphelion 2 the nude Fine Line diamond stylus mounted at 90 degrees. The aim is to recover even more detail from the groove.

Sound character

The Apheta 3 delivers clear, transparent highs, exceptional resolution, rich low frequencies and very good channel separation. The sound is musical and natural, with correct rendering of instrumental timbre and fast transient response. It is a cartridge that reveals what is really on a good pressing, without adding brightness or weight.

The ideal partner

Rega calls it the ideal partner for the Planar 8 and Planar 10, and through retailers it is also available factory-fitted as a package at a more favourable price. It also suits the Planar 6 and the RB330 and RB880 tonearms, while Rega's Aura MC phono stage is its natural companion. It needs an MC phono stage.

Undamped generator

The Apheta 3 is based on a principle that sets Rega apart from most MC cartridges: the generator works without a tie wire and without foam damping, using a rhomboid cantilever pivot and a neodymium magnet system of Rega's own exclusive design.

The problem with conventional designs

In most moving coil cartridges the cantilever is held by a thin steel wire. This wire resonates strongly at high frequencies, roughly in the 8 to 12 kHz region, and the resonance is controlled with foam or rubber material. According to Rega, the result is often either a bright sound or one that is heavy in the bass, while rubber materials change their behaviour as they age.

Rega's solution

With no wire and no damper, the Apheta 3's generator moves freely and with minimal mass. Treble stays clean and open, while bass is tight and well defined. The magnetic assembly is positioned precisely so that the coil sits at the optimal distance from the magnet and the field is correctly focused. This approach demands a body with near-zero tolerances, which is why Rega machines the body from a single piece of metal rather than assembling it from parts.

In practice the difference is heard mainly at high frequencies: cymbals, violins and voices are rendered with delicacy and natural decay, without the metallic glare that often accompanies MC cartridges. At the same time, the absence of rubber materials means the character of the cartridge does not shift as the years go by.

One-piece aluminium body

The Apheta 3's body has been redesigned and is CNC-machined from a single piece of high-quality anodised aluminium. It is a costly and demanding process, but essential to the philosophy of the cartridge, which demands absolute stability of the generator.

Why no joints

Every joint in a cartridge body is a potential source of vibration and micro-movement. When the body is one piece, the generator rests on a completely stable base and energy that is not converted into signal is carried away without returning to the stylus. This choice aims to eliminate vibration and delivers rich timbre, high transparency and a balanced tonality across the whole frequency range.

Protection during fitting

Rega used CAD to design a smoked rigid cover that protects the generator's extremely fine wires during installation. Together with the three-point fixing system, the cartridge drops into the correct position on a Rega tonearm with no overhang adjustment needed. The cartridge weighs 6 g in total, a figure that sits comfortably with the company's low-mass tonearms and their 11 g effective mass.

This construction ties in directly with Rega's philosophy for the whole replay chain: light, rigid materials and as few joints as possible, from the turntable plinth to the tonearm and the cartridge. The Apheta 3 is the final link in that chain, which is why it gives its best on turntables from the same company.

Fine Line stylus and set-up

The most important change compared with the Apheta 2 is at the tip of the cantilever. The Apheta 3 adopts a nude Fine Line diamond stylus mounted at 90 degrees, using the same technique applied to the flagship Aphelion 2, the company's reference cartridge.

A lighter generator

The coil is hand-wound on an iron cross that is 50% smaller than the first generation's and works with a high-power neodymium magnet. The lighter assembly follows the groove more freely, while the Fine Line stylus contacts a larger part of the groove wall. The result is fast transient response, clean treble, well-articulated bass and realistic timbres, with instruments placed precisely within a stable soundstage.

Correct installation

Rega specifies a tracking force of 1.9 to 2.0 g. With an output of 350 μV and an internal impedance of 10 Ω, the cartridge needs an MC stage set to 100 Ω, 1000 pF and high gain, which corresponds to the 'On' position on Rega's own phono stages. The Aura MC is the company's recommended pairing, and the cartridge is also available factory-fitted to the Planar 8 and Planar 10 through retailers.

Because a Fine Line stylus is more demanding to align than a simple elliptical profile, three-point fixing becomes especially valuable: on a Rega arm the geometry is already correct as soon as the screws are tightened, and the cartridge delivers all the detail it was designed for.
