Dual mono 2 x 125 W integrated amplifier with class A pre-amplifier
No compromise, for faithful reproduction
The Rega Aethos is an integrated amplifier without compromise, with one goal: faithful reproduction of music. Hand-built in England in a new custom case, it follows a dual mono architecture and delivers 125 W per channel into 8 Ω and 156 W into 6 Ω, using four 160 W Sanken output transistors per channel. It is a purely analogue amplifier, for systems where every link in the chain matters.
The evolution of the Elex-R and Elicit-R
The Aethos builds on the experience of the award-winning Elex-R and Elicit-R but raises the bar at every point: a discrete class A FET line stage, polypropylene capacitors in the signal path, Rega K-Power capacitors and a regulated power amplifier supply. Rega invested heavily in circuit design and construction, using components of the highest specification.
Recognised by the international press
Since its launch, the Aethos has won successive What Hi-Fi? awards as the best stereo amplifier in its class (2020 to 2024), a Hi-Fi Choice group test win (2024) and a Stereo+ Product of the Year award. It is the ideal partner for Rega's Planar 10 turntable and the Isis and Valve Isis CD players.
Dual mono architecture
The Aethos is built using dual mono construction: the two channels are treated as separate amplifiers with as few shared elements as possible. This reduces interaction between left and right channels and delivers a cleaner, more stable stereo image.
Four Sanken transistors per channel
Each channel uses four 160 W Sanken output transistors in a Darlington topology. This generous arrangement gives the Aethos 125 W per channel into 8 Ω and 156 W into 6 Ω, with enough headroom to drive loads down to 1 Ω. Even loudspeakers with a difficult impedance curve play with control, tight bass and dynamics that do not compress at the peaks.
An uncompromised power supply
Energy comes from a custom-built toroidal transformer, while Rega K-Power reservoir capacitors keep current instantly available. Both the sensitive stages and the power stage run from regulated supplies, so fluctuations in the mains and the load do not affect the sound. Typical THD+N at 100 W into 8 Ω is below 0.007% at 1 kHz.
Heatsinks along the sides of the case dissipate heat so the amplifier runs warm rather than hot. Because optimum performance requires the bias current to stabilise, the Aethos has no automatic power management, and it sounds its best after a warm-up period.
Power consumption reaches 415 W, a clear indication of an amplifier with genuine energy reserves. In practice this means effortless dynamics, with orchestral crescendos and deep bass lines delivered without strain.
Class A FET pre-amplifier
At the heart of the Aethos is a fully discrete FET line stage running in pure class A. This is where much of an amplifier's transparency and natural character is decided.
Low-noise LSK389 FETs
Rega uses Linear Systems LSK389 FETs, renowned for their exceptionally low noise, in a circuit built entirely from discrete components. Class A operation eliminates crossover distortion and keeps the signal linear throughout its range, resulting in an open, detailed sound free of harshness. Polypropylene capacitors are used in the signal path for minimal colouration.
Alps 'Blue Velvet' volume control
Volume is set by the Alps RK27 'Blue Velvet' potentiometer, one of the most respected components in high-end audio. The potentiometer operates passively while gain is set by the FET stages with feedback, which keeps channel balance accurate and noise low at every volume position.
The line inputs have 224 mV sensitivity into 17 kΩ and accept levels up to 11.5 V, so even sources with high output levels, such as modern DACs and streamers, connect without risk of overload. Response extends from 10 Hz to 30 kHz within just −0.5 dB.
The result is an amplifier that adds no colour of its own to the music. Voices sound natural, instruments have the right texture and the soundstage extends precisely between and behind the loudspeakers, with stable, well-focused images and a convincing sense of the recording space.
System flexibility
Although it is a thoroughbred integrated amplifier, the Aethos is designed to adapt to many different system configurations, now and in the future.
Direct input and pre-amp output
The switchable Direct input bypasses the volume control and feeds the power stage directly, with 840 mV sensitivity into 50 kΩ and response up to 50 kHz (−0.5 dB). This lets the Aethos act as a power amplifier for the front channels of a home cinema system, or behind Rega's Mercury pre-amplifier. Conversely, the 840 mV pre-amp output with a low 100 Ω impedance allows connection of an external power amplifier or active subwoofer.
Headphones with a clean signal path
The headphone socket is integrated so that speaker switching is handled by the output mute relay, keeping the signal path clean. The output delivers 2.7 V into 32 Ω, 4 V into 54 Ω and 9 V into 300 Ω. For even more demanding headphones, a dedicated link output feeds an external headphone amplifier.
With five line inputs, a record loop and the Solaris remote, the Aethos pairs easily with a CD player, DAC, streamer and an external phono stage such as Rega’s Aura MC or Aos MC moving coil phono stages.
The Aethos is a purely analogue amplifier with no built-in phono stage or DAC, a deliberate choice that lets each owner select their sources without compromise while keeping the amplifier's interior free from digital noise and the circuitry focused entirely on amplification.
