2 x 72 W integrated amplifier with DAC, MM phono stage and headphone output

The amplifier that brings your music to life

The Rega Elex MK4 is a high-performance integrated amplifier designed for accurate, natural sound. It is based on the award-winning class A/B power circuit of earlier Rega designs and delivers 72 W per channel into 8 Ω and 90 W into 6 Ω, driving demanding loudspeakers with ease. A Rega DAC with two digital inputs is added on the rear panel, with a headphone output on the front.

A new case that doubles as a heatsink

The MK4 arrives in a new case that brings it in line visually with the rest of the Rega range. The entire enclosure acts as a heatsink, improving heat dissipation and the thermal stability of the circuit over long listening sessions. Measuring 43.2 x 8.2 x 34 cm, it occupies the usual space of a full-width amplifier.

Flexibility for any system

Four line inputs, MM phono, optical and coaxial digital inputs, a pre-amp output and a record output allow the Elex MK4 to fit almost any system and to be upgraded later with an external power amplifier. It includes thermal, short-circuit and DC protection, while key components such as high-quality relays, polypropylene capacitors and Sanken output transistors are selected for sound quality.

Class A/B amplification

For the MK4, Rega re-engineered the entire circuit board to improve performance further. At its core is the award-winning class A/B power stage, proven over generations of the company's amplifiers and delivering 72 W per channel into 8 Ω.

Power with control

The output stage uses Sanken transistors in a Darlington topology, while the preamplifier operates in class A. This combination produces a warm, natural sound with very low distortion, around 0.005%, and the ability to control loudspeaker drivers precisely. Into 6 Ω the output rises to 90 W per channel, so the Elex MK4 suits both standmount speakers and larger floorstanders without losing tight, controlled bass.

Multi-stage linear power supply

Energy comes from a multi-stage linear power supply. The digital and analogue sections have separate, galvanically isolated supply rails, so noise from the digital circuitry does not reach the sensitive analogue stages. Heat is dissipated through the entire case, which acts as a heatsink and keeps the circuit at a stable operating temperature.

Because optimum performance requires the bias current to stabilise, Rega has not included an automatic power management function. The amplifier sounds its best after a short warm-up period.

The Elex MK4 can drive loads down to 1 Ω, thanks to its generous power supply and robust output stage. Loudspeakers with a difficult impedance curve, which would trouble a weaker amplifier, play with ease and dynamics, keeping the presentation composed even at higher volumes.

Rega DAC

The Elex MK4's digital circuit is closely based on Rega's standalone DAC-R. The engineers made sure that adding the digital inputs has no effect on the performance of the analogue circuit.

Isolation and Wolfson components

The digital inputs are galvanically and optically isolated, so noise and ground currents from the source do not enter the amplifier. The S/PDIF signal is received by a Wolfson receiver and converted to analogue by a high-quality Wolfson DAC. The converter's output is driven by a discrete line driver designed by Rega rather than a generic integrated circuit, for a more natural and controlled presentation.

Resolution up to 24-bit / 192 kHz

The optical and coaxial inputs support 16 to 24-bit depth and sample rates of 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz. You can connect a network player, CD player or television and enjoy everything from CD-quality material to high-resolution files, with no external DAC or extra cables.

The result is an amplifier that treats digital sources with the same care as vinyl, giving your system a consistent sonic character whatever the source.

The digital section complements the four line inputs and the phono input, so the whole system is controlled from one point and one remote. There is no need for a separate DAC box, power supply or interconnect, which means fewer potential sources of noise and a tidier installation on the shelf or in the equipment rack.

MM phono and headphones

Vinyl always takes centre stage in Rega amplifiers. The Elex MK4 integrates a moving magnet phono stage designed by Rega itself, the ideal partner for a Planar turntable.

Two-stage RIAA equalisation

RIAA equalisation is split into two stages to limit interaction between them and follow the curve more accurately. Polyester capacitors are used in the signal path, while the RIAA circuits use polypropylene capacitors for lower distortion. With 1.7 mV sensitivity into 47 kΩ / 220 pF and a response from 15 Hz to 65 kHz, the phono stage works superbly with most MM cartridges, such as the Rega Nd3, Nd5 and Exact.

An uncompromised headphone output

The front-panel headphone socket is designed so that speaker switching is handled by the output mute relay. The signal path therefore stays clean, and sound quality is not compromised when headphones are not in use. The output delivers 2.4 V into 32 Ω, 3.6 V into 54 Ω and 8.1 V into 300 Ω, enough level for most hi-fi headphones, from portable to high-impedance models.

For moving coil cartridges, Rega recommends the external Fono MC phono stage, which connects to one of the line inputs and offers full cartridge loading adjustment.

The record output also allows connection of an external headphone amplifier or recording device, while the pre-amp output opens the way to a future upgrade with a power amplifier or an active subwoofer, so the Elex MK4 can grow with your system.
