MC phono stage with fully adjustable loading and gain
Rega's MC phono stage
The Fono MC MK4 is a high-quality phono stage dedicated exclusively to low-output moving coil (MC) cartridges. It is designed to partner Rega's own MC cartridge range, Ania, Ania Pro, Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2, but thanks to its adjustability it also suits a wide range of MC cartridges from other manufacturers. It is made in England.
Ready for Rega cartridges
The Fono MC MK4 leaves the factory pre-set for Rega MC cartridges: 100 Ω loading, 1000 pF capacitance and high gain. With a Rega cartridge you simply connect it and listen. For other cartridges, every setting is easily changed using DIP switches on the rear panel, with no need to open the unit.
Recognition and warranty
The Fono MC has been named a Best Buy by The Ear and a Group Test Winner by Hi-Fi Choice, which praised its flexible setup and compact, handsome appearance. It is covered by Rega's Lifetime Limited Warranty against confirmed manufacturing defects.
Discrete FET input
A moving coil cartridge produces a signal of just a few tens or hundreds of microvolts, far smaller than that of an MM cartridge. That makes the first gain stage the most critical point in any MC phono stage, and it is where Rega focused its attention in the Fono MC MK4. Every choice made at this stage, from the topology to the type of transistor, determines how much noise you will hear and how much of the information on the record finally reaches your speakers.
LSK389 transistors
The input circuit is fully discrete and built around low-noise LSK389 FETs. These are devices chosen for high-end phono stages precisely because they combine very low noise with excellent linearity. The high input impedance of the FETs means this stage does not load the cartridge, so its performance is not altered by the phono stage itself. The cartridge works exactly as its designer intended, and loading is determined only by the setting you choose.
Less noise, more music
With up to 69.5 dB of gain, a signal of 67 μV is enough for 200 mV of output, while noise remains very low. The result is a silent background from which the small details emerge: the ambience of the recording venue, the decay of notes and the subtle dynamic shifts that make an MC cartridge so appealing. Frequency response extends from 13 Hz to 100 kHz, with RIAA accuracy better than ±0.2 dB, so tonal balance is correct across the whole audible range and beyond.
DIP settings for any cartridge
Every MC cartridge has its own internal impedance and output level, and performs best with a specific load. The Fono MC MK4 lets you find that ideal setting using four DIP switches on the rear panel, simply and without tools. There is no need to open the case or change loading plugs: just turn the unit round and move the switches according to the table in the user manual.
Loading and capacitance
The first two switches set the resistive input load to 70, 100, 150 or 400 Ω. The third selects a capacitance of 1000 or 4300 pF. These combinations let you match the phono stage to most low-output MC cartridges on the market, adjusting the balance between control, resolution and tonal warmth to suit the cartridge's characteristics and your own preferences. The cartridge manufacturer's recommended values are always the best starting point.
Two gain levels
The fourth switch selects 63.5 dB or 69.5 dB of gain at 1 kHz. The low setting accepts signals up to 6.7 mV and suits cartridges with relatively higher output, while the high setting reaches a sensitivity of 67 μV for very low-output designs. From the factory, the Fono MC MK4 is set to 100 Ω, 1000 pF and high gain, ready for the Ania, Ania Pro, Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2. If you own a Rega MC cartridge, there is nothing to adjust before you start listening. For any other cartridge, a few minutes with the switches is all it takes to get the best from it.
Aria heritage
The Fono MC MK4 was not designed from scratch. Its topology comes from the Aria, Rega's MM/MC phono stage, and brings its key ideas into a more compact and accessible package, aimed at listeners taking the step up to a moving coil cartridge. In this way, the know-how of a more expensive product becomes available to a much wider audience.
Carefully chosen components
The RIAA stage uses a MUSE op-amp, a series of integrated circuits designed specifically for high-fidelity audio. The capacitors in the signal path and RIAA circuit are polypropylene, a type favoured for its stability and low losses. The combination of a discrete input and carefully selected parts delivers a sound with resolution and naturalness that brings out the transparency of a good MC cartridge. Power at 24 V AC comes from an external supply, keeping the transformer and its magnetic field well away from the sensitive circuitry.
Part of the family
Visual consistency matters to Rega, and it shows here. The aluminium enclosure, measuring 18.0 x 15.5 x 5.0 cm, is the same as that of the Fono MM MK5 and the Neo PSU MK2 power supply. Rega recommends the Fono MC MK4 for the Planar 3, Planar 6, Planar 8 and Planar 10 turntables, where together with one of the company's MC cartridges it forms a perfectly matched system that looks as coherent as it sounds. It is covered by Rega's lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.
