MC phono stage with circuitry derived from the reference Aura MC
Aura technology in a half-width case
The Aos MC is Rega's new, fully adjustable phono stage for stereo moving coil (MC) cartridges, introduced in 2026. Its design is based on the Aura MC, the company's reference phono stage, and brings it into a half-width aluminium enclosure. Rega's aim was to offer the accuracy and realism of the Aura in a more accessible form, for systems using cartridges such as the Ania Pro, Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2.
Ready for Rega cartridges
The Aos MC is pre-set for Rega MC cartridges, so with one of the company's cartridges it works straight away with no adjustment. For cartridges from other manufacturers, loading, capacitance and sensitivity are set from the rear panel. It features an automatic standby function that draws just 0.4 W.
Reviews and warranty
It has already earned recognition from The Ear (Editors Choice), Hi-Fi Choice (Recommended), AVForums and Hi-Fi+. It is covered by Rega's Lifetime Limited Warranty against confirmed manufacturing defects.
Pure analogue
The Aos MC is a strictly analogue system. There are no microprocessors, displays or digital control circuits that could add noise to the delicate signal of a moving coil cartridge. As with all its electronics, Rega has removed every element that does not directly benefit the sound, so the signal path stays as short and clean as possible from input to output. All that remains is the music, with no menus and no unnecessary functions.
Shielding and stability
The half-width aluminium enclosure is not only elegant. It also acts as a shield, protecting the circuit from the radio-frequency interference (RFI) found everywhere in the modern home, from Wi-Fi routers and smart devices to mobile phones. A self-adjusting servo compensates for changes in temperature, so the circuit operates consistently from the moment the unit is switched on until the end of a long listening session.
Respect for the cartridge
The input is based on a FET arrangement that passes no bias current through the cartridge coil. This matters because the coils of an MC cartridge are extremely fine, and any current flowing through them can affect the way it behaves. In this way the cartridge works freely, exactly as its designer intended. Power consumption is 20 W in operation, while automatic standby cuts consumption to just 0.4 W when you are not listening to music, a practical touch for a component that often stays connected all the time.
Two class A stages
The circuitry of the Aos MC comes directly from the Aura MC, Rega's flagship phono stage. The company retained the architecture of the Aura's first stages, which are responsible for most of the gain and RIAA equalisation, and adapted them to a more compact half-width enclosure without diluting what makes the original so special.
First stage
This is where the most essential work is done. The first stage is a symmetrical, complementary class A design using ultra-low-noise FET transistors. At this point the cartridge signal is smaller than a thousandth of a volt, so the quality of amplification largely determines overall performance. The same stage also drives the high-frequency part of the RIAA curve, so equalisation takes place with a minimum of intermediate components and as few interactions as possible between the parts of the circuit.
Second stage
The second stage is a symmetrical differential class A design that also acts as an active amplifier for the low-frequency part of the RIAA curve. The result is RIAA accuracy better than ±0.2 dB from 65 Hz to 70 kHz, frequency response from 17.5 Hz to 100 kHz and distortion of just 0.03%. A maximum output level of 13 V rms provides enormous headroom, so even the most dynamic peaks on a record are reproduced without any trace of overload or strain. A 100 Ω output resistance makes it easy to connect to any preamplifier or integrated amplifier.
Fully adjustable loading
Every moving coil cartridge has a different internal impedance and output level, and the right loading can make the difference between good and exceptional sound. The Aos MC provides all the tools you need to find the ideal combination, with settings that are easily made from the rear panel of the unit. There is no need to open the case or swap loading plugs.
Resistance and capacitance
Flexibility is the key here. The resistive input load can be set to 70, 100, 150 or 400 Ω, and the capacitive load to 1000 or 4300 pF. These values cover the requirements of the vast majority of low-output MC cartridges. Lower loading values usually bring more control and a gentler treble, while higher values bring out air and resolution. This means you can tailor the sound to your cartridge, your system and your personal preferences with confidence, without ever compromising the signal path.
Two sensitivity levels
The correct amount of gain matters just as much. Sensitivity changes by 6 dB from the rear panel: the high setting gives 69.3 dB of gain and is recommended for Rega MC cartridges, while the low setting gives 63.5 dB for cartridges with higher output. Rega recommends the Aos MC with the Ania, Ania Pro, Apheta 3 and Aphelion 2 cartridges and with the Planar 3 RS Edition, Planar 6, Planar 8 and Planar 10 turntables, where it completes a truly high-end vinyl system built entirely around Rega engineering.
