Planar 8 engineering in the classic Planar 6 form
Rega Special: a step above the Planar 6
The Planar 6 RS Edition (Rega Special) borrows engineering from the Planar 8 while keeping Rega's classic form with a full dust cover. It builds on the plinth and dimensions of the award-winning Planar 6 and adds the RB880 tonearm, the Nd9 moving magnet cartridge, twin drive with two Reference EBLT belts and a brushed aluminium skin, the same as on the Planar 3 RS. The Neo PSU MK2 power supply is included, and the turntable is hand-built in England.
Platter and finish
The 16 mm platter consists of two layers of Opti-white float glass bonded under pressure for greater rigidity and flywheel effect. It sits on a sub-platter machined from a single piece of aluminium and carefully balanced, and an anti-static wool mat is included. The brushed metallic aluminium surface with matching edging and the smoked dust cover give a clean, premium look.
Awards and system
The Planar 6 RS was named Best Turntable £1,500–£2,500 at the What Hi-Fi? 2026 Awards and rated Exceptional by Sound Advice. With the Nd9 (MM) cartridge it needs an MM phono stage or an amplifier with an MM input, such as the Rega Fono MM MK5, Elex MK4, Elicit MK5 or Aethos.
RS plinth with Double Brace
The base of the Planar 6 RS follows Rega's philosophy of low mass and high rigidity, but with materials and a finish that lift it a class above the standard Planar 6.
Tancast 8 foam and aluminium
The core is Tancast 8, an extremely light polyurethane foam from the aerospace industry. It is clad with High Pressure Laminate and an outer brushed aluminium skin with matching edging. The result is an ultra-light yet very stiff plinth that stores minimal energy and returns almost no vibration to the stylus.
Double Brace technology
Between the tonearm mount and the main bearing, Rega places double-thickness phenolic resin on the top and bottom faces of the plinth. The braces are used only where extra stiffness is needed, so overall mass does not increase. This creates a rigid beam between the two points that define the relationship between stylus and record, limiting resonance and the transfer of motor and bearing noise.
What you hear
In practice, the stiffer base translates into a blacker background, cleaner detail and more precise bass. AVForums reviewers noted that while the differences from the Planar 6 may look cosmetic, the improvement in performance is clear, and they felt it could challenge rivals costing up to twice as much. Sound Advice, for its part, found it equal to or better than the Planar 3 RS in every respect and judged it the best balance of price, performance and features it had tested in a long time.
Twin drive and Neo PSU MK2
Stable speed is the foundation of correct timing and pitch. On the Planar 6 RS, Rega uses a solution taken from its higher models: a twin pulley and two belts.
CNC twin pulley and two EBLT belts
The motor pulley is CNC-machined with two grooves for two Rega Reference EBLT belts. The belts are moulded and specially treated so they hold their shape consistently over time, which is essential for a belt that must stay perfectly round. With two belts, drive is transferred to the aluminium sub-platter more evenly, improving speed accuracy and control. Until recently, twin EBLT drive was a privilege of the more expensive Planar models; here it comes in a turntable with classic dimensions and a full dust cover.
Motor matched to its power supply
The 24 V low-noise synchronous motor is hand-tuned to its own Neo PSU MK2. The power supply uses a DSP generator with a crystal reference and drives the motor with a sine wave, while the anti-vibration circuit reduces motor noise. Switching between 33⅓ and 45 rpm is electronic, with no need to touch the belts.
Fine adjustment
The user can adjust the speed in 0.01 rpm steps from the rear of the power supply. The Neo PSU MK2 is fed by the Rega PS1 wall supply (24 V AC, 350 mA) and consumes just 7.2 W, with the motor output protected by a resettable fuse. Speed can be verified with Rega's optional Strobe Kit, giving full confidence that every record plays exactly as intended.
RB880 tonearm and Nd9 cartridge
The Planar 6 RS takes the tonearm usually found on the Planar 8 and pairs it with Rega's flagship moving magnet cartridge, the Nd9, assembled and aligned at the factory.
RB880
Rega describes the RB880 as an arm that extracts more detail from the record surface. It has a redesigned aluminium vertical bearing housing with a stainless steel sleeve and shaft for better mounting stability. The new arm tube with redistributed mass reduces resonance, while hand-selected bearings provide almost zero friction. The cartridge is fixed at three points and the arm is assembled by hand, complete with a low-capacitance phono cable. Its 11 g effective mass and Rega's standard geometry leave room for a future upgrade to moving coil cartridges.
Nd9: Rega's flagship MM
The Nd9 is a hand-built moving magnet cartridge with a Fine Line nude diamond measuring 3 x 30 µm, mounted on a boron cantilever. The combination tracks groove modulations precisely and delivers fine detail with excellent channel balance. A neodymium magnet, miniaturised parallel coils and a rigid PPS body complete the design, and each cartridge is built by hand at Rega.
Easy to connect
Fitted with Rega's 3-point fixing and with an output of 5–6 mV and a tracking force of 1.75 g, the Nd9 works with any MM phono input. Rega also offers the Planar 6 RS with the Ania moving coil cartridge as a separate version, for listeners who already own or plan to buy a moving coil phono stage.
