Reference dual mono 2 x 162 W integrated amplifier in a CNC-machined aluminium case

Rega's flagship integrated amplifier

The Rega Osiris is the flagship of Rega's integrated amplifiers and the distillation of more than three decades of the company's transistor amplifier experience. A dual mono design, 162 W per channel into 8 Ω and 250 W into 4 Ω, and a case machined by CNC from solid aluminium combine in an amplifier for the most demanding systems. Weighing 25.6 kg, the Osiris makes its philosophy clear from first contact.

A simple path for maximum clarity

The Osiris architecture is based on a high-gain circuit with a passive pre-amplifier and passive volume control, followed by a single gain stage. Fewer stages mean fewer components in the signal path and less opportunity to alter it. Gain via the Direct input is 44 dB.

Part of the Reference series

The Osiris comes with Rega's reference CNC remote control and reference mains lead. It is the natural partner for the Isis and Valve Isis CD players, the Aura MC phono stage and the Planar 10 turntable, forming a complete top-tier system from a single manufacturer. The press, including Hi-Fi+, has praised its natural tonal balance and its ability to present music with coherence and insight.

Triple output stage

Rega designed the Osiris around a low-distortion, highly linear, wide-bandwidth circuit capable of controlling any type of loudspeaker, regardless of impedance or sensitivity.

Eight Sanken transistors per channel

Each channel uses eight 200 W Sanken power transistors in a high-current 'triple' output stage. This arrangement provides vast current reserves, so the Osiris delivers 162 W into 8 Ω and 250 W into 4 Ω without losing control, even with loudspeakers that present a difficult load. Low-inductance surface-mount film resistors are used in the output stage.

Balance and control in the bass

A cascode differential input stage with low-noise current sources, together with careful tuning of the feedback loops and the balance between gain and bandwidth, delivers a stable soundstage. Rega placed particular emphasis on low-frequency control, so bass is fast, clean and correctly weighted.

Audio-grade Nichicon capacitors are used at critical points in the circuit, and where needed electrolytics were replaced with polyester capacitors for better high-frequency performance. Response extends from 20 Hz to 26 kHz within just −0.5 dB at 160 W, and THD+N stays below 0.05%, confirming a circuit designed for linearity first.

The Osiris brings out the rhythm and detail of the music, while adapting to very different loudspeakers with the same ease. Reviewers have highlighted its natural tonal balance and the absence of a strong sonic signature of its own.

Twin 400 VA power supply

An amplifier of this class is only as good as its power supply. That is why Rega made no compromises in the section that gives the Osiris its energy.

Twin toroidal transformers

At the heart of the supply are two low-noise 400 VA toroidal transformers, mounted so they do not transfer vibration and noise to the chassis. They are followed by Rega K-Power smoothing capacitors with a total capacitance of 40,000 µF and fast-recovery rectifier diodes for a cleaner DC supply. The result is a power supply that instantly delivers the current demanded by musical peaks.

Isolating the sensitive circuits

The input and pre-amplifier stages are fed by a separate, regulated, low-noise symmetrical supply. Even input selection, the display, protection circuits and the microprocessor have their own supplies, so no noise from auxiliary circuits reaches the delicate signal path of the amplifier.

Maximum power consumption is 560 W, while consumption in off mode is zero. Because optimum performance requires thermal stabilisation, the Osiris has no automatic power management and sounds its best once fully warmed up, as befits a true reference amplifier.

This strict isolation of circuits explains the exceptionally quiet background of the Osiris, against which the smallest details of a recording, such as the acoustic of the venue and the natural decay of instruments, are clearly heard even at low listening levels.

Inputs and signal path

Every component that touches the signal in the Osiris has been chosen for minimal loss and minimal colouration, from the input to the speaker terminals.

Transformer-balanced input

Line 1 is fully balanced via a transformer, similar to the one used in Rega's Ios Reference phono stage, and accepts sources with XLR outputs. Lines 2 to 5 and the record input are RCA. Inputs are selected by high-performance relays controlled by a dedicated microprocessor isolated from the signal path. The signal path uses Mundorf polypropylene capacitors and the Alps 'Blue Velvet' potentiometer.

Direct input

The Direct input bypasses the volume control and feeds the power amplifier directly, with 44 dB of gain. It is ideal for connecting the front channels of a home cinema system via an AV receiver's pre-out, or for use with an external hi-fi pre-amplifier, avoiding the need for a second amplifier in the system and keeping the setup simple.

Internal wiring is of high quality, with heavy-gauge speaker cabling and low-loss Klotz coaxial cable. Speaker terminals and RCA sockets are gold-plated, while the 215 mV record output allows connection of a recorder or an external headphone amplifier.

This careful selection of materials and components completes a signal path that remains short, clean and transparent, exactly as Rega intends, so that the character of each source and recording comes through unaltered to the loudspeakers.
