Reference fully discrete pre-amplifier with DAC, USB input and headphone amplifier

A no-compromise pre-amplifier

The Rega Mercury is Rega's reference pre-amplifier, hand-built in England and designed with one goal: an ultra-low noise floor and wide dynamic range, so that no detail of the music is lost. It is the latest result of almost four decades of Rega solid-state amplifier development and, by component count, the most complex electronic product the company has ever built.

From the 1990 Elicit to the Reference series

The roots of the circuit go back to the Elicit amplifier of the early 1990s. The input stage shares its topology with the Aura MC phono stage, while the volume control follows the same active topology as the Osiris amplifier. Everything is housed in a CNC-machined aluminium case with a full-colour IPS display on the front panel.

The perfect partner for the Solis

The Mercury was developed alongside the Solis power amplifier, with which it forms a fully symmetrical, discrete pre/power system. It can also drive the Aethos via its Direct input. Supplied in the box are a reference mains lead, a Couple 3 interconnect, two trigger cables and the backlit Orbit remote control.

The art of silence

For Rega, the best pre-amplifier is the one you cannot hear. A truly clean circuit preserves the subtle details of quiet passages rather than masking them with noise.

Fully discrete, symmetrical circuitry

The Mercury uses discrete, differentially driven symmetrical stages with complementary class A outputs for minimal distortion. Linear Systems ultra-low-noise FET transistors and the Alps RK27 'Blue Velvet' potentiometer complete a signal path with typical THD+N of just 0.001% at 1 kHz. Frequency response extends from 8 Hz to 28 kHz within only −0.5 dB.

A power supply with 60% more headroom

A toroidal transformer feeds a linear, discrete, symmetrical power supply. The supply voltage is around 60% higher than is typical for this class, giving the stages generous headroom before clipping and handling even highly dynamic material with ease. The display and control circuits have separate supplies, keeping the audio path isolated.

The signal path uses high-quality relays and audio-grade polypropylene capacitors. The combination produces a completely silent background against which music unfolds with full dynamics and natural presence, revealing the finest details of every recording.

For Rega, a silent background is the foundation on which every other quality of a system is built: resolution, dynamics and realism. The Mercury is designed to provide exactly that foundation for the rest of the chain.

Reference digital section

The Mercury is not just a pre-amplifier. It integrates a high-performance DAC, designed with the same care as the analogue stages, so digital sources are reproduced at the same level as vinyl.

Two Wolfson DACs in parallel

The S/PDIF inputs, two coaxial and two optical, use a Wolfson receiver and accept 16 to 24-bit signals from 32 to 192 kHz. Conversion is handled by two Wolfson DACs running in parallel, with typical THD+N of 0.0045% at 1 kHz and 0 dBFS. You can connect a CD transport, network player, television or other digital sources without an external converter.

Asynchronous, isolated USB

The USB input is galvanically isolated, with its own power supply, and re-clocks PCM and DSD data. It supports PCM from 16 to 32-bit at 44.1 to 192 kHz and DSD64 via DoP, in asynchronous mode, where timing is controlled by the Mercury's clock rather than the computer.

The USB input draws virtually no current from the computer (under 0.5 mA), further limiting the transfer of noise. With five RCA line inputs and a balanced XLR input, the Mercury becomes the control centre of the entire system, handling analogue and digital sources alike.

Analogue and digital sources are selected from the front panel or the remote, with the active input shown on the IPS display. This is a pre-amplifier that comfortably replaces a separate DAC and keeps the system simpler, with fewer interconnects and fewer power supplies.

Headphones, display and control

The Mercury was designed as a fully featured reference product, with flexibility and ease of use suited to everyday listening.

Discrete headphone amplifier

The headphone amplifier uses the same symmetrical driver topology as the Solis power amplifier and drives both low- and high-impedance headphones. It delivers 9 V / 2.5 W into 33 Ω and 10.85 V / 0.5 W into 240 Ω, with typical THD+N of just 0.0035%. This is a headphone amplifier worthy of a standalone component, built into the pre-amplifier and ready for serious personal listening.

IPS display, Orbit remote and protection

The full-colour IPS display clearly shows source, volume and status, while the backlit Orbit remote makes operation easy in low light. A microcontroller manages slow start, standby and power supply supervision, while DC levels on the main and headphone outputs are monitored continuously.

The Mercury offers balanced and unbalanced inputs and outputs. Rega considers unbalanced connections preferable for domestic hi-fi, as its core circuits are unbalanced, with XLR connections added mainly for studio and professional use. If no signal is present for 20 minutes, it automatically enters standby, drawing 0.4 W.

Trigger connections allow synchronised switching with the Solis, so the whole system powers on and off together with a single press of the remote, making the pre/power combination as simple to use as an integrated amplifier.
