Reference fully symmetrical stereo power amplifier, 2 x 168 W
Next-level performance, zero compromise
The Rega Solis is Rega's reference stereo power amplifier, designed and hand-built in England for the most demanding listeners. It delivers 168 W per channel into 8 Ω and 305 W into 4 Ω, aiming for clarity and detail with every kind of music and driving even the most difficult loudspeakers with ease. Rega's engineers spent around four years refining its circuit.
Why a separate chassis
Separating the pre-amplifier and power amplifier into two chassis keeps sensitive low-voltage circuits away from high-current stages, reducing interference and noise. The Solis is the ideal partner for the Mercury pre-amplifier, forming a fully symmetrical, discrete system, and it is also compatible with the Aethos, which can act as its pre-amplifier via its pre-out.
Almost four decades of experience
The Solis is the result of almost forty years of Rega amplifier development, with improved thermal stability and heatsinking. Combined with the Aura MC phono stage and the Mercury, it forms a fully symmetrical, discrete chain. Supplied in the box are a reference mains lead, a Couple 3 interconnect and two trigger cables.
Fully symmetrical circuit
The Solis is based on a fully symmetrical amplifier circuit in which every stage is designed for low distortion and maximum control over the loudspeaker drivers.
Twelve high-current transistors
A differentially driven driver stage feeds twelve high-current output transistors in a 'triple' arrangement. This allows the Solis to deliver 168 W per channel into 8 Ω and 305 W into 4 Ω, almost double the power into half the load, the mark of an amplifier that behaves as a genuine current source. The result is controlled, deep bass and effortless drive even into loudspeakers with a very demanding load.
Selected components in the path
The signal path uses polypropylene capacitors, non-inductive resistors and relays, together with audio-grade capacitors and resistors. Typical THD+N at 100 W into 8 Ω is 0.015% at 1 kHz, while response extends from 15 Hz to 30 kHz within just −0.5 dB.
A gain of 33.3 dB and sensitivities of 820 mV on the unbalanced input and 1.64 V on the balanced input allow correct matching with the Mercury, the Aethos and other quality pre-amplifiers. The Solis adds power without adding any colour of its own to the signal it receives.
Together with the Mercury and the Aura MC, the symmetrical circuit of the Solis completes a chain in which the signal remains in discrete, symmetrical stages from the turntable cartridge all the way to the speaker terminals, without a single integrated op-amp in the audio path.
Power supply and thermal stability
The Solis power supply is designed so that the amplifier always has the current the loudspeakers demand available, without passing noise into the signal.
Twin toroidal transformers
Two low-noise toroidal transformers feed large per-channel smoothing capacitors, high-quality Nichicon K-Power types, via fast-recovery diodes. This design is what allows the Solis to nearly double its output when the load falls from 8 to 4 Ω. The audio circuits have dedicated supply rails, so the heavy current demands of the output stage do not affect the sensitive low-level stages that handle the incoming signal.
Improved cooling
Decades of Rega experience have led to improved thermal stability and heatsinking, so the circuit runs at a stable temperature even during long, dynamic listening sessions. Stable temperature means stable bias current and therefore a consistent sonic character from the start to the end of a session.
The Solis operates on 230, 220, 120 or 100 V mains within ±10%, and consumes 500 W at 1/8 of rated power. Weighing 24.8 kg and measuring 43.5 x 14 x 38.5 cm, it is a component whose build quality speaks for itself the moment you lift it.
The amplifier is not designed to impress with numbers but to deliver music with stability, ease and control at every volume level, even with the most demanding recordings, from large orchestral works to dense electronic music with extended low bass and sharp transients.
Protection and operation
A power amplifier of this output needs comprehensive protection. The Solis continuously monitors its operation to protect both itself and your loudspeakers.
Microcontroller supervision
The Solis monitors DC levels at the speaker outputs and amplifier temperature, and includes short-circuit protection. A microcontroller manages slow start, limiting inrush current at switch-on. When no signal is present for one hour, the amplifier enters an eco-friendly standby drawing 0.4 W, a function the user can select.
Balanced or unbalanced
The Solis offers a balanced XLR input and an unbalanced RCA input. Rega explains that its core circuits are unbalanced and recommends unbalanced connection for domestic hi-fi, while XLR connections are provided mainly for studio use and do not in themselves improve sound quality.
The 12 V trigger allows synchronised switching with the Mercury so pre and power turn on together, while the independent mute function makes system changes easier. The two trigger cables and Couple 3 interconnect in the box make connection immediate, with everything needed to get the system playing straight out of the box.
Besides the Mercury, the Solis also works with the Aethos integrated amplifier, which takes on the pre-amplifier role via its pre-out. Owners of an Aethos can therefore add a Solis for even more power and control, without changing the rest of their system and while keeping the Aethos at the centre of it.
