2 x 50 W integrated amplifier with MM phono stage and built-in Rega DAC
The seventh generation of a legend
The Brio has been one of hi-fi's best-loved compact amplifiers for decades, and the Rega Brio MK7 is its most advanced and fully featured version yet. Hand-built in England in a half-width aluminium case, it delivers 50 W per channel into 8 Ω and 72 W into 4 Ω, enough to drive demanding loudspeakers. For the first time in the model's history, it integrates a Rega-designed DAC with two digital inputs.
Dedicated MM phono stage
Vinyl remains at the centre. The Brio MK7 features a dedicated moving magnet phono stage with improved isolation between internal stages and high-specification op-amps to amplify the cartridge signal. With 2.1 mV sensitivity into 47 kΩ / 220 pF and ±0.4 dB RIAA accuracy, it is the natural partner for a Planar 1, Planar 2, Planar 3 or Planar 3 RS Edition.
One of the most musical amplifiers in its class
The Brio has built its reputation on rhythm, balance and natural presentation, and the MK7 adds more detail and refinement. With three line inputs, phono, two digital inputs and a 6.3 mm headphone output, it covers a complete modern system in an amplifier just 21.6 cm wide.
Re-laid circuit
For the MK7, Rega's engineers re-laid the circuit from scratch, aiming for lower distortion and better performance at every stage. The improvements cover both materials and manufacturing.
Two power supplies for a cleaner signal
The most important change is the addition of a second raw power supply. The output stage, which draws high currents when the music demands dynamics, is now isolated from the sensitive driver, line and phono stages. Load fluctuations no longer affect the low-level circuits, which translates into lower noise, a more stable stereo image and a quieter background. Typical THD+N is just 0.005% at 1 kHz.
MUSES op-amps and a Darlington output stage
The new PCB layout allowed higher-specification parts, with MUSES op-amps in the line, DAC and phono stages. The power stage is based on Rega's proven Darlington topology with Sanken output transistors, while the preamplifier operates in class A. The Brio MK7 delivers 50 W per channel into 8 Ω and 72 W into 4 Ω, with the control and speed that made the model famous. The whole circuit sits in a half-width aluminium case that also acts as a heatsink for effective heat dissipation, keeping the amplifier stable during long listening sessions. With continuous use into 4 Ω loads the case can become noticeably warm, so placement with free ventilation space around and above the unit is recommended.
The outcome is a Brio that keeps the familiar rhythmic character of the line while offering more resolution, a cleaner background and greater ease when the music becomes dense and dynamic.
Built-in Rega DAC
The Brio MK7 is the first Brio with a built-in DAC. The circuit is designed by Rega and opens the amplifier to every modern digital source without an external converter.
Two digital inputs
The rear panel carries one galvanically isolated coaxial S/PDIF input, at 0.5 V and 75 Ω impedance, and one optical Toslink input. You can connect a network player, CD transport, television or games console and hear them through the same circuit that handles your vinyl. Isolation of the coaxial input prevents noise from the digital source from reaching the amplifier's analogue stages, preserving the quiet background that Rega amplifiers are known for.
High resolution up to 24-bit / 192 kHz
The DAC supports sample rates of 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz, covering everything from CD-quality material to high-resolution files. MUSES op-amps in the DAC's analogue output stage ensure the digital signal is reproduced with the same musicality and natural presentation as analogue sources. Together with three line inputs and phono, the Brio MK7 becomes the hub of a complete system, where turntable, streamer and television coexist without extra boxes on the shelf.
Integrating the DAC in the same case also means fewer interconnects and fewer power supplies, and therefore fewer potential sources of noise. A simpler system that sounds better, in keeping with Rega's philosophy of putting the music first.
Headphones, standby and protection
The MK7 brings a series of practical features to the Brio without sacrificing any of the purity of the signal path. Every addition is designed to stay outside the audio circuit.
A carefully designed headphone output
The onboard headphone circuit drives standard hi-fi headphones, delivering up to 5.9 V into 300 Ω through a 6.3 mm front-panel socket. It is designed to have minimal impact on the main signal path, and particular attention was paid to the switch that mutes the speakers when headphones are plugged in. The new mini system remote now also controls standby, so the amplifier can be switched on and off from the listening position.
Auto standby and full protection
If there is no signal on the selected input for around one hour, the Brio MK7 automatically enters standby, drawing just 0.4 W. This function can be disabled if preferred. If a dangerous temperature is reached, the thermal cut-out first disables the speaker output and, if overheating continues, powers the unit down. Foldback short-circuit protection limits current if the speaker leads are shorted, and because it sits outside the signal path it has no effect on sound quality.
These features make the Brio MK7 an amplifier you can leave in your system without thinking about anything other than the music, safe in the knowledge that it protects both itself and your loudspeakers through many years of everyday use in the home.
