Compact 2 x 30 W integrated amplifier with MM phono stage and headphone output

Rega sound in its most accessible form

The Rega io is the smallest integrated amplifier from the British manufacturer and the most direct way into a genuine Rega system. Hand-built in England, it shares its power stage and phono stage with the award-winning Brio, delivering 30 W per channel into 8 Ω from a chassis just 18 cm wide. It offers two line inputs, a built-in MM phono stage and a dedicated front-panel headphone output, and comes with Rega's new mini remote control.

Built for a simple, musical system

The io is aimed at listeners who want clean, lively sound without unnecessary features. It pairs naturally with the Planar 1, Planar 1 Plus, Planar 2 and Planar 3 turntables and the Kyte bookshelf speakers, and comfortably drives small standmount speakers or a compact pair of floorstanders. Speakers connect via screw terminals that also accept banana plugs.

Small footprint, serious construction

Measuring 18 x 6.8 x 29 cm and weighing 2.9 kg, the io fits easily on a shelf, desk or TV unit. Its new chassis was designed specifically for it, while a linear power supply with a toroidal transformer keeps performance stable. Like every Rega amplifier, it benefits from a short warm-up period for the bias current to settle and deliver its best.

The heart of the Brio

The io is not a cut-down amplifier. It uses the same power stage as the award-winning Brio, adapted to deliver 30 W per channel into 8 Ω, and follows the same design philosophy that runs through Rega's entire amplifier range.

Class A/B with hand-picked components

The circuit operates in class A/B and is built from discrete components, each chosen by Rega's engineers for its contribution to the final sound. Sanken transistors, known for their linearity and robustness, handle the output stage, while an Alps potentiometer sets the volume and keeps channel balance accurate across its range. Inputs are switched by relays so the signal follows a short, clean path through the amplifier.

Linear power supply for steady dynamics

Instead of a switch-mode supply, the io uses a linear power supply built around a toroidal transformer. This provides clean current and energy reserves for musical peaks, so the amplifier stays controlled and lively even at higher listening levels. The result is Rega's characteristic rhythmic, engaging sound in an amplifier that fits almost anywhere in the home.

Power consumption reaches 135 W at full load. Because performance improves once the circuit reaches operating temperature and the bias current stabilises, Rega deliberately omits an automatic power management function. It is a conscious decision in favour of sound quality, and it says a great deal about the company's approach even in its most affordable model.

Built-in MM phono stage

For Rega, vinyl is the starting point rather than an add-on. That is why the io integrates the same phono stage as the Brio, so a turntable with a moving magnet cartridge connects directly, without an external preamplifier.

Accurate RIAA equalisation

The phono input has a sensitivity of 2.1 mV into 47 kΩ in parallel with 220 pF, the standard loading for most MM cartridges, and accepts signals up to 100 mV without overload. RIAA equalisation tracks the standard curve within a typical ±0.4 dB from 100 Hz to 10 kHz, and is often better than ±0.3 dB. The tonal balance of a record is therefore reproduced faithfully, without inflated bass or a hard treble.

The natural partner for a Planar

The input includes a ground terminal for the tonearm lead, so the turntable connects without hum. Paired with a Planar 1, Planar 2 or Planar 3, the io forms a complete, properly matched analogue system from a single manufacturer, where tonearm, cartridge and phono stage are designed to work together. The two line inputs remain free for a streamer, CD player or television.

The line inputs have a sensitivity of 210 mV into 47 kΩ and handle levels up to 10.25 V, with a response extending from 12 Hz (−1 dB) to 43 kHz (−3 dB). The phono input covers 15 Hz to 40 kHz (−3 dB). These figures confirm that the io treats the turntable and line sources with equal care, despite its compact size and its position as the entry point to the range.

Headphones and control

The io's headphone output is not a second-class circuit. It is fed directly from the amplifier's power stage via relays, so headphones receive the same quality of signal that reaches the speakers.

Driven from the power stage

Relays disconnect the speakers when headphones are plugged in or when mute is engaged. This keeps extra switches out of the signal path, so there is no degradation of the sound. The 3.5 mm front-panel output delivers 1.6 V into 32 Ω, 2.4 V into 54 Ω and 5.7 V into 300 Ω, enough for most hi-fi headphones, from low-impedance portable models to more demanding high-impedance designs.

New mini remote control

The io comes with Rega's redesigned mini remote, letting you select sources and adjust volume from the listening seat. On the front panel, a large rotary control and a few simple buttons make operation immediate, with no menus or settings to learn. This is an amplifier you switch on and simply enjoy music with, whether through loudspeakers or in private late-night listening on headphones.

The remote runs on two AAA batteries, supplied in the box. The chassis layout, with all controls grouped on the front panel and every connection on the rear, allows a tidy installation on a shelf or cabinet, with cables hidden behind the unit and the front left clear for headphones. Clean, functional and free of anything superfluous, like every Rega product, the io is designed to be used daily for many years.
