Hand-built MM cartridge with elliptical stylus and parallel coils

Rega's classic MM cartridge

The Elys 2 is a hand-built stereo moving magnet (MM) cartridge, made in England, and the successor to the popular Super Elys. Every unit is assembled by hand by Rega's skilled technicians with one simple aim: to retrieve as much detail and music from the record as possible. It combines an elliptical stylus, an aluminium cantilever and Rega's three-point mounting, and is easy to recognise by its blue body.

Upgrade and factory-fitted option

Rega recommends it as an upgrade for the Planar 2 and as an ideal match for the Planar 3 and Planar 6, and it suits every Rega turntable. In Greece the Planar 3 is also available with the Elys 2 factory-fitted. With an output of 6.8 to 7.2 mV it works comfortably with any MM phono stage, from the Fono Mini A2D MK2 and Fono MM MK5 to the phono stages of Rega amplifiers. On turntables from other makers it requires a headshell with three-point mounting.

Rebuild and warranty

Through the Rega rebuild scheme, a worn or damaged cartridge can be returned to a Rega dealer and exchanged for a rebuilt unit with a new cantilever, stylus and pivot pad at a reduced price. The Elys 2 is covered by Rega's Lifetime Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects.

Coils made by Rega

The heart of any moving magnet cartridge is its generator, the point where the tiny movement of the stylus is turned into an electrical signal. With the Elys 2, Rega does not leave this critical part to anyone else: it winds the coils itself, at its own facilities in England, and controls every stage of the process from start to finish.

Parallel winding

The coils of the Elys 2 are built to a high specification and wound in a parallel configuration. Two sets of coils are assembled on special custom-made jigs to form a stereo generator, which is then fitted into the cartridge body. Precision at this stage determines the balance between the left and right channels, which in the Elys 2 is held within ±0.3 mV, so that instruments are placed correctly across the stereo soundstage.

A healthy output

The result is a cartridge with a generous output of 6.8 to 7.2 mV. A high signal level means the Elys 2 comfortably drives any MM phono stage, with no need for additional gain or a step-up transformer, and that the music stands clearly above the noise of the circuit. When listening, this translates into clarity, convincing stereo imaging and natural dynamics, qualities that have earned the Elys 2 numerous awards from the specialist press. Every cartridge is tested and inspected over two days to confirm it meets the model's tolerances, before it is packed or fitted to a Rega turntable at the factory.

Elliptical stylus

Whatever the generator does, sound quality starts at the point of contact with the record. The Elys 2 uses an elliptical stylus mounted on an aluminium cantilever, a combination that retrieves more information from the groove than a simple conical stylus and makes a clear difference across a wide range of recordings.

Precision in the groove

The elliptical profile contacts the groove walls over a narrow, elongated area that more closely resembles the shape of the cutting head that made the record. The stylus therefore follows the fine undulations of the recording more accurately, especially at high frequencies and towards the inner grooves, where distortion tends to rise. The light aluminium cantilever transfers this movement to the generator quickly and with minimal losses, at a recommended tracking force of 1.75 g.

An analytical character

In practice, the Elys 2 stands out for its dynamics and analytical detail. Instruments are clearly defined, notes are reproduced with precision and every source finds its proper place in the soundstage. The cartridge suits most musical genres and is particularly at ease with orchestral music and acoustic recordings, where detail and imaging matter most. The big climaxes of an orchestra are delivered with ease, while quiet passages keep their texture and atmosphere. For the owner of a Rega turntable, it is one of the most direct ways to hear more from an existing record collection.

3-point mounting and rebuild

A cartridge performs only as well as its connection to the tonearm allows. With the Elys 2, Rega treats cartridge and tonearm as a single system, with the aim of preserving the integrity of the signal and limiting losses caused by vibration and resonance.

A rigid connection

Rega's three-point mounting, using three screws, creates a tight, rigid connection between cartridge and tonearm. Unwanted vibrations are drawn away from the stylus and channelled through the arm towards the turntable, away from the record, rather than returning to the generator and blurring detail. On a Rega tonearm fitting is simple and correct alignment is achieved almost automatically, without complicated measurements or alignment protractors. Turntables from other makers need a headshell with three-point mounting to gain the same benefits.

Pivot pad and rebuild

Rega's pivot pad design removes the mechanical joint between the stylus housing and the cartridge body, improving tracking and stylus stability. This is why the stylus of the Elys 2 is not removable: when it wears, the whole cartridge is exchanged through the Rega rebuild scheme. The Rega dealer takes in the old cartridge and the owner receives a rebuilt unit with a new cantilever, stylus and pivot pad, which goes through the same two-day testing as a new one. The price is reduced thanks to the trade-in of the old cartridge, which keeps the cost of ownership low over the years.
