A mono MM cartridge made specifically for 78 rpm records
For 78 rpm collections
The Rega RB78 is a hand-built mono moving magnet (MM) cartridge in a custom body that Rega designed specifically for playing 78 rpm records. It is a general-purpose cartridge for anyone who wants to hear historic shellac recordings properly and with the right tools, from jazz and blues to classical music and early folk recordings.
Why a dedicated cartridge is needed
78 rpm records are mono and are cut with a much wider groove than microgroove vinyl records. An ordinary stereo stylus sits too low in that groove and reads noise instead of music. The RB78 uses a stylus with a 78 profile and a mono generator, so that it rests on the right parts of the groove wall.
Its natural partner
Rega makes the Planar 78, a single-speed turntable dedicated to 78 rpm, and the RB78 is the dedicated cartridge it recommends for it; it is sold separately. Thanks to standard two-screw fixing, it can also be fitted to another turntable or to a second tonearm on a deck that supports 78 rpm.
Mono MM generator
The RB78 is a moving magnet cartridge with a generator designed from the outset for a mono signal. It is not a stereo cartridge with bridged channels, but a tool made specifically for the way 78 rpm records were cut.
Parallel-wound coils
Rega uses high-specification parallel-wound coils, the same technique it applies to its MM cartridges. Parallel winding contributes to low internal impedance and clean, stable transfer of the signal to the phono stage.
Because the generator is mono, it sends the same signal to both channels, exactly as the music was recorded. The result is a stable, centred image and a tonal character that stays faithful to the original recording, with voices and instruments locked firmly in place between the speakers.
Without the artificial 'stereo' effects that a stereo cartridge creates on mono material, the music sounds solid and focused.
High output
With an output of 6.8 to 7.2 mV, the RB78 delivers a strong signal that works comfortably with any standard MM phono input, from an amplifier's built-in phono stage to an external stage such as the Rega Fono MM. No MC stage or step-up transformer is needed.
The high output also improves the phono stage's signal-to-noise ratio, which is valuable for recordings that by their nature already have limited dynamics and a fair amount of surface noise.
The volume can therefore be raised without hum or hiss emerging from the electronics.
78-profile stylus
The most critical element of a 78 rpm cartridge is the stylus. The RB78 uses an elliptical stylus with a 78 profile, sized for the wide grooves of shellac records.
Contact in the right place
The grooves of 78 rpm records are much wider than those of modern LPs. A microgroove stylus sinks to the bottom, where dust and wear collect, and mainly reads noise. A 78-profile stylus rests higher up on the groove walls, where the musical information actually lies.
The elliptical shape allows finer tracing of the modulations than a simple spherical stylus, so more detail and harmonics are recovered from recordings that are often more than seventy years old, bringing a surprising sense of presence to voices and instruments.
Many collectors find that records they considered worn sound far better with the correct stylus, simply because it reads untouched parts of the groove wall.
Gentle tracking force
Rega specifies a tracking force of 1.75 g, a value that allows stable tracking of the groove without unnecessary strain on the records. For collectors with rare or fragile copies, this is a real advantage.
Correct set-up is easy with the tonearm counterweight and a stylus gauge such as the Rega Atlas, so that the stylus always works at the point it was designed for and the records are treated with the care they deserve.
A correctly set-up cartridge protects the collection and keeps the stylus in good condition for longer.
Fitting and the Planar 78
The RB78 uses standard two-screw fixing, so it fits any tonearm with a conventional headshell. Its ideal platform, however, is Rega's own Planar 78, one of very few modern turntables designed exclusively for these records.
A turntable dedicated to 78
The Planar 78 is a single-speed turntable made exclusively for 78 rpm records. It has a low-noise 24 V synchronous motor, a hand-assembled RB220 precision tonearm, an Advanced EBLT drive belt and a phenolic resin platter with a flywheel effect for stable speed.
Because it is dedicated to one speed, the motor and pulley are optimised for 78 rpm without compromise. The RB78 is sold separately and is the cartridge Rega recommends for it, completing a purpose-built player for historic recordings.
The turntable has a matt black plinth and a clear lid, measuring 44.7 x 11.7 x 36 cm (W x H x D, lid closed) and weighing 4.2 kg.
A second platform
For anyone who already owns a turntable for their LPs, the Planar 78 with the RB78 forms a separate, ready-to-play platform for a shellac collection, with no changing of cartridges and settings each time. Both decks can be connected to the same amplifier, using separate inputs.
Alternatively, the RB78 can be fitted to a second tonearm or to a turntable with a 78 rpm speed, provided the alignment and tracking force are set correctly for the best possible results.
Either way, the RB78 gives historic recordings the place they deserve in a modern hi-fi system.
