A turntable made only for 78 rpm records

For the love of 78 rpm records

The Planar 78 is Rega's turntable for anyone who collects and listens to 78 rpm records. Belt driven and made in England, it combines the company's latest 24 V motor technology with the hand-assembled RB220 precision tonearm and the advanced EBLT drive belt. The plinth comes in a discreet Matt Black finish.

Minimalist design with a purpose

Rega designed the Planar 78 with a single mission: accurate playback of 78 rpm records. It deliberately left out anything that does not serve that goal, so that every part of the budget goes into components that genuinely affect the sound. Historic recordings released only in this format thus gain a source worthy of their value, with a stability and clarity that multi-speed turntables rarely offer.

What you need to get started

The turntable is sold without a cartridge. Rega recommends the RB78 mono cartridge, designed specifically for the wide groove of 78 rpm records and available separately. You will also need an amplifier with a phono input or an external phono stage, such as the Rega Fono MM or Fono Mini A2D.

Dedicated to 78 rpm records

78 rpm records carry half a century of recordings, from the earliest jazz and blues sides to classical music and the popular songs of the early 20th century. Many of these recordings were never released in any other format. Rega created the Planar 78 for anyone who wants to hear them properly.

One speed, no compromise

The Planar 78 spins at 78 rpm only. Rega deliberately left out every extra feature so that the entire budget could go into higher-quality components and the most accurate reproduction possible. With no speed-change mechanism, the drive path stays simple, stable and quiet. The result is a turntable that does one job and does it very well, made in England and designed to last for many years of listening.

The ideal second turntable

For collectors who already own a turntable for LPs, the Planar 78 is a dedicated second source: there is no need to swap cartridge or stylus every time you move from vinyl to a 78. After switching on it takes around 10–15 seconds to reach full speed, and Rega recommends leaving it running throughout a listening session. The tonearm is earthed automatically through the cable shielding, so no separate earth lead is required. If you own a collection of 78s, the Planar 78 is the simplest way to bring it back to life with the quality it deserves, without the compromises of a vintage player or a multi-speed deck. Because it is always set up for 78s, a record can go from sleeve to platter in seconds.

RB220 tonearm & RB78 cartridge

The Planar 78 shares its tonearm with the Planar 2: the RB220, hand assembled in England. This gives a single-speed turntable a precision arm capable of tracking the wide grooves of 78 rpm records with stability and composure.

Three-point mounting and automatic bias

The RB220 is fixed to the plinth with a three-point mounting system, which according to Rega reduces stress on the plinth and improves stability. The bias (anti-skate) mechanism works automatically, so no adjustment is required. Tracking force is set simply with the counterweight: once the arm is balanced, each half turn of the weight equals 1 g, with the plastic markers on the weight as a guide. An alignment protractor is included in the box.

Rega RB78 cartridge

78 rpm records have a much wider groove than LPs and need a dedicated stylus. For this Rega makes the RB78 mono moving magnet cartridge, sold separately, which tracks at 1.75 g. Its fixing nut goes on the top of the headshell and should not be over-tightened. The Planar 78 also accepts other 78 rpm cartridges, with tracking force set to their manufacturer's recommendation. Should you wish to upgrade the drive later, Rega's Reference EBLT belt is available as an optional extra. As the original recordings are mono, a mono cartridge reproduces them faithfully and is the natural choice for this format, helping each recording sound as complete and as natural as it was meant to.

24 V motor, platter & plinth

78 rpm records are demanding when it comes to speed stability: any deviation is immediately audible in the pitch of voices and instruments. That is why the Planar 78 uses Rega's latest 24 V motor technology, the same philosophy applied across the Planar range of turntables.

24 V synchronous motor and EBLT belt

The high-quality, low-noise 24 V synchronous motor is powered by the external Rega PS2 supply (24 V AC), which is the only adaptor that should be used with this turntable. The advanced EBLT drive belt is fitted as standard and transfers drive accurately, contributing to steady rotation. The on/off switch is located on the underside of the plinth, out of sight but easy to reach.

Phenolic resin platter and matt black plinth

The platter is phenolic resin and, thanks to its mass, acts as a flywheel that smooths out small variations in drive. Since January 2023 the lightweight plinth has had a matt black finish, discreet and elegant next to any system. For the best result Rega recommends a rigid, level surface away from hollow or very heavy furniture, or its own wall bracket, while cleaning should be done only with a soft cotton cloth, without polish or solvents. Rega also advises keeping the original packaging in case the turntable needs to be moved, and never removing the centre hub from the main bearing, which could disturb the lubricant and affect accuracy. During play, the lid can stay closed to keep dust off the record.
