Plug & play turntable with RB110 arm and Carbon cartridge
The way into the Rega world
The Planar 1 is the turntable that opens Rega's Planar range: hand built in England, belt driven, playing 33⅓ and 45 rpm records, with a pre-set RB110 tonearm and a factory-fitted Carbon cartridge. It comes out of the box almost ready to play; Rega puts set-up at under 30 seconds. This version comes in a Walnut-effect finish with a smoked dust cover.
Award-winning design, refined throughout
The model has won What Hi-Fi?'s «Best Turntable £200-£500» award five years in a row. For the latest generation Rega redesigned the motor, tonearm, belt and plinth, aiming for performance beyond its price. The result is a turntable that asks for no adjustment yet makes no compromise on the essentials: stable speed, low noise and a tonearm that reads the groove accurately.
What you need to get started
In the box you will find the Carbon cartridge already in place, a felt mat, dust cover, counterweight and the external power supply. The Planar 1 connects to an amplifier with an MM phono input, such as the Rega io, or to an external phono stage. If your system has no phono input, the Planar 1 Plus includes its own built-in phono stage.
RB110 tonearm & Carbon cartridge
At the heart of the Planar 1 sits the RB110 tonearm, hand assembled at Rega's factory in England and delivered already set up together with its cartridge. No stylus gauge, alignment protractor or specialist tools are needed: screw on the counterweight and the record is ready to play.
Ultra-low friction bearings and automatic bias
The RB110 uses Rega's patented ultra-low friction bearings, so the stylus follows the groove with minimal resistance. A new bias assembly is preset for the Carbon cartridge, which means there is no anti-skate adjustment for the owner to make. The arm has a cueing lever and an integrated arm clip that secures it after listening, while the headshell has been redesigned to be stiffer, easier to handle and cleaner in appearance. The 111 g plug & play counterweight delivers the correct tracking force for the cartridge that is already fitted, removing one of the most common set-up mistakes.
Rega Carbon cartridge
The Carbon moving magnet (MM) cartridge is fitted and adjusted at the factory. It is built for Rega by Audio-Technica, based on the AT91, and uses a conical stylus on a carbon cantilever that adds rigidity and damps vibration. The stylus is easy to replace, and Rega also offers the Carbon Pro upgrade stylus with an elliptical profile for listeners who want more detail without changing the cartridge body. When the time comes, Rega's wider cartridge range offers a clear upgrade path.
24 V motor, EBLT belt & platter
Stable rotational speed is the foundation of good vinyl replay: without it, pitch and musical timing suffer. That is why Rega invested more in the drive system of the Planar 1 than in any of its previous entry-level turntables. Every link in the chain, from motor to platter, was chosen to keep rotation steady, quiet and free of vibration.
Low-noise 24 V synchronous motor
The Planar 1 is the first entry-level Rega turntable to use a 24 V AC synchronous motor. It is paired with a new motor control board and an aluminium pulley, which according to Rega lower noise and improve speed stability while keeping the vibration that reaches the plinth to a minimum. The motor cover tray has integrated cooling. Switching from 33⅓ to 45 rpm is done by hand, moving the belt to the second step of the pulley: a simple solution that keeps the electronics clean and the signal path short, in line with Rega's long-standing preference for doing less, better.
EBLT belt and phenolic resin platter
The EBLT drive belt, now fitted as standard, is designed for greater accuracy and better speed performance. It drives a sub-platter that carries the 23 mm phenolic resin platter. The platter's higher mass creates a stronger flywheel effect that smooths out tiny variations in drive, giving a steadier, more assured presentation from the first bar to the run-out groove. A felt mat sits on the platter to complete the arrangement and support the record evenly.
Plinth, main bearing & isolation
For decades Rega's turntable philosophy has rested on one simple idea: a lightweight yet rigid structure that does not store energy and does not pass noise to the stylus. The less energy the structure stores, the more cleanly the stylus is left to read only what is in the groove. On the Planar 1 that idea is applied to every part of the plinth and bearing.
New matt-finish plinth
The plinth is made from a high-rigidity laminate and is available in matt black, matt white and a special walnut-effect edition supplied with a smoked dust cover. The on/off switch has been moved to the underside, where it falls easily to hand without spoiling the clean lines of the turntable. A dust cover is included and protects both record and stylus when the turntable is not in use, so the Planar 1 can live comfortably in a living room as well as a dedicated listening space. The three finishes are chosen to suit contemporary and more classic interiors alike.
Brass bearing and new feet
The main bearing is precision brass and sits in a new housing that improves fit and reduces stress on the bearing. This patent-pending design limits the transfer of energy towards the record. The feet are a new design for greater stability and less vibration transfer from the furniture beneath. For the best result, Rega recommends a rigid, level surface or its own turntable wall bracket, which is especially useful on suspended wooden floors.
