Turntable with RB220 tonearm and Optiwhite glass platter
A 1975 legend, rewritten
The Planar 2 continues the story of the turntable of the same name that Rega introduced in 1975. Today's version was developed over around two years alongside the Planar 3 and borrows many of its engineering improvements: the RB220 tonearm, a new low-noise 24 V motor, a high-gloss acrylic laminated plinth and a redesigned main bearing. Rega's goal was to extract as much detail as possible from the groove. This version comes in a Walnut-effect finish with a smoked dust cover.
Ready to play, with room to grow
The Planar 2 is supplied with the Rega Carbon cartridge factory fitted, making it practically plug & play. At the same time, the RB220 tonearm with its adjustable bias leaves the door open to a cartridge upgrade later on. The model has collected awards and glowing reviews from What Hi-Fi?, Hi-Fi Choice, Hi-Fi News and Sound Matters.
What you need to get started
A dust cover, felt mat and multilingual quick start guide are included. The Planar 2 needs an amplifier with an MM phono input or an external phono stage, such as the Rega Fono Mini A2D.
RB220 tonearm
The RB220 tonearm is the next step in the evolution of Rega's arms and the main reason the Planar 2 stands apart from the entry-level Planar 1. It is hand assembled in England and reaches the listener with the cartridge already fitted and aligned, so no tools or prior experience are needed. Its design draws on more than three decades of Rega tonearm engineering, refined for a new price point.
New bearing housing, stiffer and lighter
The RB220 uses Rega's patented ultra-low friction bearings, mounted in a new housing that is both stiffer and lighter than that of its predecessor. The arm tube is Rega's own custom aluminium design, with a mass distribution that limits resonance. Low-capacitance internal wiring and high-quality Neutrik connectors carry the cartridge's delicate signal to the phono stage with minimal loss. An integrated arm clip secures the tonearm after listening, while the cueing lever makes lowering the stylus safe and gentle every time.
Adjustable bias for more cartridges
Since autumn 2020 the RB220 has an adjustable bias (anti-skate) mechanism, which significantly widens its compatibility with cartridges of different specifications. The cartridge mounts using Rega's three-point fixing, and the counterweight is adjusted for accurate tracking force. The Planar 2 therefore starts life with the Carbon, yet is ready for a cartridge upgrade, such as the Nd3 or Nd5, whenever you decide the time is right.
Optiwhite glass platter & 24 V motor
For the Planar 2 Rega applied production techniques developed for the Planar 3, resulting in a drive system that clearly goes beyond what the entry-level model offers. Its three key elements, platter, motor and belt, work together for steady and quiet rotation. Speed stability is what gives music correct pitch, clean timing and natural flow, even in the most demanding passages of a recording.
10 mm Optiwhite float glass platter
The platter is made from 10 mm Optiwhite float glass with a polished finish. Glass offers even mass distribution and a neutral character, and according to Rega the new platter brings a clear improvement in accuracy over its predecessor. A felt mat sits on top, supporting the record and keeping unwanted resonances at bay. Its look, with the characteristic clear edge, has become a signature of the Planar turntables and immediately identifies a Rega on any equipment rack.
24 V motor and EBLT belt
The new low-noise, low-vibration 24 V motor comes with a new control board that keeps rotation steady and limits the vibration that reaches the plinth and, ultimately, the stylus. Since March 2021 the Planar 2 has been fitted as standard with the advanced EBLT drive belt, designed for greater speed accuracy. Changing from 33⅓ to 45 rpm is done by hand, moving the belt on the motor pulley, a solution that keeps the signal path simple and the electronics free of extra circuitry that could add noise.
Plinth, bearing & isolation
For decades Rega has argued that a turntable should be light and rigid, so that it stores no energy and adds no colouration to the sound. The plinth, main bearing and feet of the Planar 2 were designed with exactly that logic, and every part plays its role in keeping the record free from unwanted energy.
High-gloss acrylic plinth
The lightweight plinth is finished in high-gloss acrylic or a walnut-effect laminate and is stiffer than that of the previous model. The power switch has been moved to a more ergonomic position, where it falls naturally to hand. Gloss versions come with a clear dust cover, while the walnut version has a smoked one that complements its warmer look. To protect the finish, Rega offers optional plinth and lid protectors that prevent marks from everyday use.
11 mm brass bearing and new feet
The main bearing is an 11 mm brass design with a self-securing construction for which Rega has a patent pending. It fits the plinth better and is subject to less stress during rotation, which translates into greater accuracy and a quieter background for the music. The feet have been redesigned for better stability and less vibration transfer from the furniture beneath. For the best result, Rega recommends a rigid, level surface or its own wall bracket, which is compatible with the Planar 1, 2, 3 and 6. Avoid hollow or very heavy cabinets, which tend to store and release energy back into the turntable.
