Plug & play turntable with built-in phono stage
The ultimate plug & play turntable
The Planar 1 Plus is Rega's award-winning Planar 1 with a built-in phono stage for moving magnet cartridges. Hand built in England, belt driven and playing 33⅓ and 45 rpm records, it comes with a pre-set RB110 tonearm and a factory-fitted Carbon cartridge, and connects straight to any line-level input. This version comes in a Walnut-effect finish with a smoked dust cover.
For anyone returning to vinyl
Rega added the phono stage to its most successful turntable to make good vinyl sound accessible to any system: a modern amplifier without a phono input, active speakers or a compact music system. The motor, tonearm, belt and plinth have all been redesigned for better performance, making the Planar 1 Plus a choice built to last for years. Among its accolades are a five-star review from What Hi-Fi? and Hi-Fi Choice's Group Test Winner title (2024).
In the box
Supplied are the platter, mat, counterweight, dust cover, a twin RCA lead and the PS1 power supply, with the Carbon cartridge already fitted and protected by a stylus guard. Nothing else is needed apart from an amplifier or a pair of active speakers.
Built-in phono stage
A moving magnet cartridge produces a signal of just a few millivolts that needs dedicated gain and RIAA equalisation before it reaches an amplifier. Many modern systems, active speakers and soundbars have no phono input at all. The Planar 1 Plus solves this inside the turntable itself, turning it into a self-contained source: a single lead is all it takes to play.
Derived from the Fono Mini
The phono stage in the Planar 1 Plus is a custom version of the Rega Fono Mini, a phono stage awarded five stars by What Hi-Fi?, adapted by Rega to be built into the turntable. It amplifies the Carbon cartridge's signal by 40 dB and raises it to line level, with a maximum output of 370–410 mV. RIAA accuracy is typically ±0.4 dB from 100 Hz to 20 kHz, the pre-amplifier's frequency response extends from 14 Hz to 100 kHz and the signal-to-noise ratio reaches 75 dB (A-weighted). Input loading is the standard for MM cartridges: 47 kΩ in parallel with 220 pF.
Connects to any system
Thanks to its line-level output, the turntable connects to any analogue line input on an amplifier, a pair of active speakers or a music system, using the twin RCA lead supplied. For devices with a 3.5 mm input, an RCA-to-3.5 mm lead (sold separately) is all that is needed. Power comes from Rega's external PS1 supply (24 V AC), with consumption of only 3.4 W, while the on/off switch sits discreetly on the underside of the plinth.
RB110 tonearm & Carbon cartridge
At the heart of the Planar 1 Plus sits the RB110 tonearm, hand assembled at Rega's factory in England and delivered already set up together with its cartridge. No stylus gauge, alignment protractor or specialist tools are needed: screw on the counterweight and the record is ready to play.
Ultra-low friction bearings and automatic bias
The RB110 uses Rega's patented ultra-low friction bearings, so the stylus follows the groove with minimal resistance. A new bias assembly is preset for the Carbon cartridge, which means there is no anti-skate adjustment for the owner to make. The arm has a cueing lever and an integrated arm clip that secures it after listening, while the headshell has been redesigned to be stiffer, easier to handle and cleaner in appearance. The 111 g plug & play counterweight delivers the correct tracking force for the cartridge that is already fitted, removing one of the most common set-up mistakes.
Rega Carbon cartridge
The Carbon moving magnet (MM) cartridge is fitted and adjusted at the factory. It is built for Rega by Audio-Technica, based on the AT91, and uses a conical stylus on a carbon cantilever that adds rigidity and damps vibration. The stylus is easy to replace, and Rega also offers the Carbon Pro upgrade stylus with an elliptical profile for listeners who want more detail without changing the cartridge body. When the time comes, Rega's wider cartridge range offers a clear upgrade path.
24 V motor, EBLT belt & platter
Stable rotational speed is the foundation of good vinyl replay: without it, pitch and musical timing suffer. That is why Rega invested more in the drive system of the Planar 1 Plus than in any of its previous entry-level turntables. Every link in the chain, from motor to platter, was chosen to keep rotation steady, quiet and free of vibration.
Low-noise 24 V synchronous motor
The Planar 1 family is the first entry-level Rega design to use a 24 V AC synchronous motor. It is paired with a new motor control board and an aluminium pulley, which according to Rega lower noise and improve speed stability while keeping the vibration that reaches the plinth to a minimum. The motor cover tray has integrated cooling. Switching from 33⅓ to 45 rpm is done by hand, moving the belt to the second step of the pulley: a simple solution that keeps the electronics clean and the signal path short, in line with Rega's long-standing preference for doing less, better.
EBLT belt and phenolic resin platter
The EBLT drive belt, now fitted as standard, is designed for greater accuracy and better speed performance. It drives a sub-platter that carries the 23 mm phenolic resin platter. The platter's higher mass creates a stronger flywheel effect that smooths out tiny variations in drive, giving a steadier, more assured presentation from the first bar to the run-out groove. A felt mat sits on the platter to complete the arrangement and support the record evenly.
