Rega's flagship CD player
The Rega Isis is Rega's reference CD player, built to the highest achievable standard inside and out. It uses Rega's own CD technology and is housed in a CNC-machined anodised aluminium case, with a total weight of 19 kg. The company spent five years designing it, drawing on all its experience in building specialist hi-fi components.
Top loading and wide compatibility
The disc is placed from above, directly onto the mechanism, without a tray. The Isis plays CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3-CD and WMA-CD, and offers a USB input for connection to a computer and playback through its internal DAC. It comes with a CNC-machined Rega remote control.
Part of the Reference series
The Isis is the natural partner for the Osiris and Aethos amplifiers, as well as the Mercury pre-amplifier. Tone Audio described it as a product that offers the best performance in its price class. For those who prefer the character of valves, Rega offers the Valve Isis, which shares the same digital section.
Class A analogue stage
In the Isis, Rega avoided standard op-amp ICs in the critical current-to-voltage stage, so the sound is not locked to the character of those chips. Instead, it designed discrete class A op-amps and filters, tuned by ear.
Dual DACs in dual mono
Two Burr-Brown PCM1794 DACs run in parallel in dual mono configuration, one per channel, delivering wide dynamic range and very low distortion. Their signal feeds a discrete class A stage whose circuit is derived from the first stage of Rega's Ios moving coil phono stage. The path is fully balanced to the XLR outputs, with single-ended RCA outputs also provided for amplifiers without balanced inputs.
A dedicated analogue power supply
The analogue section has its own 50 VA transformer and ten independent voltage regulators, isolated from the digital section. RF ground-plane techniques further improve sound quality, while sensitive capacitors are bypassed with film types.
The result is a frequency response of 17 Hz to 20 kHz within just ±0.1 dB and THD+N below 0.0013%. Rega K-Power capacitors and audio-grade electrolytics complete an analogue section worthy of a reference system, delivering the depth and natural scale that define the Isis.
The fully balanced path to the XLR outputs makes the Isis an ideal match for the Osiris, with its transformer-balanced input, and for the Mercury pre-amplifier, both of which accept XLR connections directly from the player for a fully balanced chain.
Digital section and disc reading
A CD player is only as good as the data it recovers from the disc. That is why Rega upgraded every element of the Isis digital section.
Servo, error correction and PLL
A custom-designed servo controller keeps the laser in the optimum position for accurate data recovery. The chipset provides extra error correction, balancing musical performance with resistance to jitter caused by vibration. A custom, super-stable PLL clocks the chip, improving the quality of the data delivered to the DAC. The CPU is designed to minimise data and address bus noise.
Disc analysis
During start-up, the Isis automatically calibrates itself to each disc, which often allows it to read discs with marks or scratches that other players cannot play. The control code has also been optimised for faster start-up, so playback begins promptly after the disc is loaded.
The digital section has its own 50 VA transformer and a further ten regulators, while the mechanism, optical amplifier, DSP core, PLL and motor power supplies have all been upgraded. Optical amplifier headroom has been improved by 10%, giving the reading system more margin with every disc.
All these refinements share one goal: to deliver the most accurate and clean signal possible to the DAC, so the analogue stage reproduces the music and not the errors of the reading process. It is the same philosophy that runs through every Rega product, from the most affordable to the Reference series.
Reference case and USB
The Isis is not only exceptional electronically. Its case is designed specifically for it and is an integral part of its performance.
CNC-machined anodised aluminium
The chassis is CNC-machined from aluminium and anodised black. Its mass and rigidity absorb vibration and provide an ideal platform for the transport. Top loading keeps the front panel clean and requires 20 cm of free height above the unit when the lid is opened. The Rega remote control is also CNC-machined to the same exacting standard, in harmony with the player and the rest of the Reference series.
USB input
Via a USB A-B cable, the Isis connects to a computer or laptop to play internet radio, MP3 or WMA files through its internal DAC. The interface is isolated and has its own regulated power supply, blocking earth currents and power supply noise from the computer.
Power consumption is just 23 W, and separate fuses are used for the analogue and digital sections, a sign of the complete isolation between the two. This is a CD player designed to be the reference point of a high-end system for many years to come, whatever amplifier and loudspeakers it is partnered with.
The understated design and build quality of the Isis make it sit harmoniously beside the Osiris, the Aethos or the Mercury and Solis pairing, forming a unified Rega system with a consistent look and sound. It is a player designed to be kept, enjoyed and relied upon for decades.
