EXN100 is the network player of Cambridge Audio's new EX range — a series outperformed only by the flagship Edge. Refined at the company's London headquarters, it brings together a reference DAC, the StreamMagic platform and HDMI eARC in an elegant, solid chassis.

Key features

  • ESS reference DAC, tuned in London for the EX range
  • Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Deezer and internet radio
  • Roon Ready
  • HDMI eARC for TV sound
  • USB audio, coaxial and TOSLINK inputs
  • Chromecast built-in, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth aptX HD
  • Digital preamp mode
  • Multiroom with Google Home, Apple AirPlay and Roon
  • Large high-resolution colour display

A reference DAC, pushed to the limit

EXN100 is built around a reference converter: the ESS Sabre ES9028Q2M. Cambridge Audio's engineers in London did not stop at the chip. They tuned every stage of the signal path by ear, from the power supply to the analogue output stages, so that the EX range takes a real step beyond CX. In the company's line-up, EX performance is bettered only by the flagship Edge series.

High resolution, no limits

Playback reaches 32-bit / 768 kHz and DSD512, with support for WAV, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, WMA, MP3, AAC, HE AAC, AAC+ and OGG Vorbis. Files from a USB drive or a NAS on your network play at their full resolution, with extremely low distortion and a wide dynamic range. EXN100 sits among the most capable network players in its class, with the digital side never becoming the limit of the system.

What you actually hear

The result is immediately audible: sharper focus, a quieter background and more space around every instrument. The fine details of a recording, a singer's breath or the decay of a piano note, come through without the sound turning cold or clinical. Instrument separation holds together even in dense passages, and the music keeps its flow and dynamics at any volume.

Part of the EX range

EXN100 is designed to work as one system with the EXA100 amplifier, sharing its design language and its remote. It works just as well as an upgrade to a quality system you already own: every digital source you connect runs through the same reference converter.

All your music, wirelessly

The StreamMagic platform, developed by Cambridge Audio for more than a decade, gives instant access to Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Deezer and internet radio from around the world. Control comes from the StreamMagic app on your phone or tablet, with unified search, playlists and favourites on one screen, and regular software updates that keep the player current.

Roon Ready and multiroom

EXN100 is certified Roon Ready, bringing your entire digital library into one interface, from files on a NAS to streaming services. UPnP support connects it to any server on the network, while Google Home, Apple AirPlay and Roon let it join a multiroom system and play in sync with the rest of the house.

Cut the cords, not the quality

With Chromecast built-in and AirPlay 2 you can stream straight from almost any app on a phone, tablet or computer. Bluetooth aptX HD accepts high-quality wireless playback, from an Alva turntable for example, without compromising the rest of the system. Connection is over Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet, when you want maximum stability with high-resolution files.

One app for everything

Through StreamMagic you can find albums, artists and stations across all connected services at once, build favourites and change source without getting up. Software updates arrive over the network and add new services and features over time.

The heart of your system

EXN100 is more than a streamer. The 5-inch (12.7 cm) high-resolution display shows album artwork, track information or VU meters, so you can see what is playing without reaching for your phone. Control comes from the StreamMagic app or from the EX series remote, the same one supplied with the EXA100 amplifier, for unified control of the whole system.

Connect every source

USB audio, coaxial S/PDIF and optical TOSLINK digital inputs accept a computer, CD transport, games console or other digital sources, all running through the same reference DAC. Outputs include RCA analogue and balanced XLR, for connection to demanding amplifiers, plus digital outputs when you want to use an external converter.

TV sound, transformed

The HDMI eARC input brings sound from films, series and sport straight into your hi-fi system, an upgrade you will feel as much as hear. In digital preamp mode, EXN100 handles input switching and volume control and drives a power amplifier or active speakers directly, for a system with as few boxes as possible.

Built to justify its place

The solid metal chassis and the clean fascia of the EX range keep the sensitive circuitry quiet and give the player a presence that suits a system of this level. It is a component you set up once and keep for years, with its software refreshed along the way.
