Technology & Craft
The streaming section of the ND5 XS 2 uses the latest Naim network card featuring low-noise, high-speed low-voltage differential signalling (LVDS) to route the digital audio signal. The higher speed is capable of decoding all HD audio formats at up to 32 bits/384 kHz or DSD128. Rather than the source acting as the digital timing master, our new streaming board turns things around and allows our DAC clock to control the flow of audio data. The data is integer-over-sampled in a SHARC DSP to an incredible 40-bit accuracy before it’s fed to the PCM1791A Burr-Brown digital-toanalogue converter.
Developing a new streaming platform was one of the biggest projects we have ever taken on. Naim engineers across all disciplines – electronic, industrial, acoustic and mechanical – worked for three years to create a system that could make the most of online services such as TIDAL and Spotify while adding future-proof flexibility through Chromecast built-in. Supporting faster data rates with dual-band Wi-Fi and the latest 802.11ac protocol, this robust platform was designed for the highest performance on every level.

AK4499EX and AuralEngine
The DMP-A8 Gen 2 uses AKM's flagship AK4499EX DAC together with the AK4191EQ digital modulator. AKM splits digital processing and analogue conversion across two separate chips, so noise from one does not reach the other. Velvet Sound technology preserves the natural character and harmonics of the music.
New AuralEngine platform
Eversolo's proprietary AuralEngine processes the digital stream asynchronously with a powerful DSP, so the signal reaches the DAC bit-perfect and jitter stays minimal. PCM up to 32-bit / 768 kHz and DSD512 are supported.
Precision clock
Two femtosecond oscillators with very low phase noise keep signal timing stable and reduce jitter.
Measurements
At the XLR output: 4.2 V, SNR above 129 dB and THD+N of just 0.000075% (−122 dB), with response flat from 20 Hz to 20 kHz (±0.25 dB).
R2R preamp and room correction
The fully balanced analogue preamplifier controls volume with a passive R2R network of precision resistors and low-tolerance relays, with no digital loss of resolution. The DMP-A8 Gen 2 can therefore drive a power amplifier such as the Eversolo AMP-F8, or a pair of active speakers, directly.
Separate power supplies
The analogue stages run from a low-noise linear supply with a toroidal transformer, while the processor and display have their own supply. Electrical isolation between digital circuits, network and analogue stages is improved over the first generation.
Room correction
Parametric EQ, room correction, FIR filter support and advanced bass management. The subwoofer output has an adjustable crossover from 40 to 500 Hz, and there is a high-pass filter for the speakers.
Fixed level
If you already own a preamp or integrated amplifier, the outputs switch to fixed level and the unit works purely as a streamer and DAC.
Streaming and connectivity
Eversolo's EOS operating system plays TIDAL, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, HighResAudio and internet radio bit-perfect, with Spotify Connect Lossless, TIDAL Connect and Qobuz Connect.
8.6" screen and octa-core processor
The large colour touchscreen shows album art, resolution and animated VU meters. The octa-core processor with 8 GB RAM keeps browsing large libraries fast, and the NVMe slot takes SSDs up to 8 TB, double the previous generation.
Every connection
HDMI ARC/eARC for the TV, RCA and XLR analogue inputs for a turntable with phono stage or other sources, and USB, HDMI I²S, optical, coaxial and professional AES/EBU digital outputs for an external DAC.
Noise-free networking
Alongside Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6 there is an SFP port for fibre connection, fully isolating the unit from network electrical noise. AirPlay, DLNA, Roon Ready and Bluetooth 5.4 complete the picture.
