CXA81 Mk II is the reference integrated amplifier of the CX range: 80 watts per channel in Class AB, a built-in ESS DAC and full connectivity — behind a clean, minimal aluminium fascia.

Key features

  • 80 W per channel (8 Ω) — drives demanding speakers
  • ESS ES9018K2M SABRE32 DAC, up to 32-bit / 384 kHz and DSD256
  • Class AB amplification
  • Toroidal transformer
  • TOSLINK, coaxial and USB audio digital inputs
  • Balanced XLR inputs
  • Bluetooth aptX HD input
  • Roon Tested via USB

A classic, rewritten

Improving on the CXA81 was no easy task: the original had established itself as a benchmark in its class, with a long list of awards from the specialist press. Cambridge Audio redesigned it from the ground up, with higher-grade components arranged in a new architecture that limits interference between stages.

What the listener gains

The result is greater depth, more transparency and finer resolution of detail. Instruments that went unnoticed, small shifts in the inflection of a voice and harmonies that were lost in the background now come through clearly, without the sound turning aggressive or tiring over long listening sessions.

A minimal fascia

CXA81 Mk II puts sound ahead of clutter. Its clean aluminium fascia carries only what you need: power, input selectors, a headphone output and a beautifully smooth volume control. The restrained lines in aluminium and steel are built to last, both mechanically and aesthetically.

At the heart of the CX range

It matches the CXN100 network player and the CXC v2 CD transport in looks and in engineering, for a complete system with one consistent design. It is available in silver, and in a limited black edition alongside the other models in the range.

Dimensions and placement

At 430 x 115 x 341 mm and 8.7 kg, CXA81 Mk II fits easily on a shelf or hi-fi rack, and its weight conveys the serious engineering inside. It is an amplifier you set up once and forget, in the sense that it never reminds you of its limits.

Class AB power with character

At the heart of CXA81 Mk II is a Class AB power stage that combines the warmth of Class A with the efficiency of Class B. It delivers 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 120 watts per channel into 4 ohms, enough to drive bookshelf speakers and floorstanders with ease, even in large rooms.

An oversized toroidal transformer

The large toroidal transformer gives the power stage a stable supply even in the most demanding passages. The amplifier plays loud without strain and without distortion, keeping bass tight and the soundstage stable when the music gets difficult.

Dynamics and harmonic depth

Wide dynamics and a rich harmonic palette are what set this amplifier apart: quiet passages keep texture and detail, loud ones open up without hardening. A short signal path keeps colouration to a minimum, so every note reaches the speakers as intact as possible.

Two pairs of speakers

The two sets of binding posts accept heavy-gauge cable, spades and banana plugs and drive two pairs of speakers, together or independently. You can run a second pair in another room, or compare two pairs in the same listening session.

For headphones too

The front-panel headphone output gives quality headphones the drive they need for late-night listening, following the same design logic as the power stage: enough current, low noise and no attempt to make the sound impressive by artificial means.

Connect all your sources

The digital side is comprehensive: two optical inputs and one coaxial accept a CD player, DAB tuner or television, while the USB-B port lets you use the amplifier as an external DAC for a Windows or Mac computer. Every digital source runs through the ESS ES9018K2M converter, with support up to 384 kHz and DSD256.

Analogue connections

Four RCA inputs and one balanced XLR cover a turntable with an external phono stage, a network player or any other analogue source. The balanced connection makes particular sense with sources such as CXN100, where it reduces noise along the signal path.

Flexibility in the system

The pre-out allows connection to an external power amplifier, while the subwoofer output adds a sub when the room calls for it. Trigger in and out switch all compatible components on and off together, and the RS232 port covers installations with a control system.

Wireless with aptX HD

The built-in Bluetooth receiver supports aptX HD, so wireless playback from a phone, tablet or computer happens with as little compression as possible. It is the quick way for a guest to play music from their own phone without compromising the system.

A system that grows

Whatever your starting point, CXA81 Mk II is happy to evolve with it: today a TV and a computer, tomorrow a network player, a turntable or a power amplifier. That flexibility is the main reason the CX range has remained a reference choice for years.
