There was a time when Ultra Short Throw projectors were seen mostly as “smart alternatives” to large televisions rather than serious cinematic tools. Easy to install and practical for everyday living spaces, yet often compromised when it came to contrast, black levels and overall image depth.

The Aetherion MAX combines a Pure Triple Laser RGB system with a 4K UHD DLP architecture, delivering brightness levels up to 3,300 ISO lumens alongside colour reproduction covering 110% of the Rec.2020 colour space. In practice, this translates into an exceptionally vivid and luminous image, rich in saturation and colour purity, capable of maintaining a distinctly cinematic character even at very large screen sizes. What stands out, however, is not merely the specification sheet, but the way the projector handles contrast and HDR content. AWOL Vision integrates its Noirscene System II, combining a multi-stage mechanical iris with dynamic brightness processing in an effort to achieve deeper blacks and improved shadow control — an area where many Ultra Short Throw projectors traditionally struggle.
With Dolby Vision content, early impressions point towards an image with impressive depth, striking highlights and a noticeably more three-dimensional presentation than what we have become accustomed to within this category.

One of the greatest advantages of Ultra Short Throw projection has always been installation flexibility. Here, the Aetherion MAX operates at genuinely impressive levels. Thanks to its approximately 0.20:1 throw ratio, it can produce a 100-inch image from less than 16 centimetres away from the wall, while even 150-or 200-inch projections remain remarkably close to the projection surface.
What makes this particularly significant is not only the image size itself, but the fact that an Ultra Short Throw projector can now deliver cinematic-scale diagonals that, only a few years ago, required dedicated projection rooms and significantly more complex installations.
The idea of 150- or even 200-inch projection is no longer a technological demonstration. It is beginning to make genuine sense within a modern living room environment.

Gaming without the traditional limitations of projection

The projector supports high refresh rates and exceptionally low input lag, creating an experience that feels closer to a high-end gaming monitor than a conventional projector setup.
On consoles such as the PlayStation 5, HDR tone mapping appears particularly impressive, delivering intense highlight brightness, excellent shadow detail retrieval and an image that combines cinematic presentation with genuine responsiveness.
Only a few years ago, this would have been considered almost impossible for a projection system of this category.
A strong focus on optical engineering
AWOL Vision also appears to have invested considerable effort into the optical architecture of the Aetherion MAX. The lens system has been designed to maintain stable focus even after extended periods of operation and increased thermal load, while early demonstrations suggest impressive edge-to-edge sharpness consistency across the entire image.
At the same time, the company claims to have significantly reduced the so-called rainbow effect traditionally associated with DLP projection systems — a phenomenon that can become distracting or fatiguing for certain viewers.

There is, however, something else immediately noticeable about the Aetherion MAX: its build quality. AWOL Vision seems to have approached this projector more as a piece of premium cinematic hardware rather than simply another lifestyle projection device. The solidity of the chassis, thermal management and overall sense of engineering precision feel closer to a high-end AV component than a conventional consumer projector. And that matters, because in products of this level, the ownership experience often becomes almost as important as the image itself.
Does it really need a CLR screen?
The short answer is yes — if you want to experience what this projector is truly capable of. A projector of this level can certainly display an image directly onto a white wall. However, a dedicated CLR (Ceiling Light Rejecting / Ambient Light Rejecting) screen dramatically changes the overall experience. These screens are specifically engineered to work with the projection angle of Ultra Short Throw systems while rejecting ambient light from the room. The result is noticeably deeper blacks, higher perceived contrast and significantly improved image performance in brighter living spaces.
With a projector such as the Aetherion MAX, a proper CLR screen should not really be considered an accessory. It is part of the system itself.
