The slimline AV receiver, refined

The Marantz Cinema 70s S2 is the second generation of Marantz's slimline 7.2-channel AV receiver. It keeps everything that made its predecessor a success, namely 7 x 50 W, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, six HDMI inputs and HEOS streaming, and upgrades the audio section with a new 32-bit 8-channel DAC and Dirac Live compatibility. All in a chassis just 10.9 cm tall.

  • Slim chassis, 10.9 cm tall
  • 7 x 50 W into 8 ohms, 7.2 or 5.2.2 layouts
  • New 32-bit 8-channel DAC
  • Dolby Atmos, DTS:X
  • Audyssey MultEQ XT, optional Dirac Live
  • 3 HDMI 2.1 inputs with 8K/60 Hz and 4K/120 Hz, eARC
  • HEOS streaming, AirPlay 2, Roon Ready

Slim design, full-size power

The Cinema 70s S2 keeps the formula that made its predecessor a success: seven channels of amplification in a chassis just 10.9 cm tall. At 44.2 cm wide and 37.2 cm deep, it fits easily next to the TV or inside a TV cabinet, where a conventional AV receiver simply will not go. The front panel keeps the signature Marantz look, with its symmetrical layout and central display.

7 x 50 W with the Marantz sound

Seven discrete power amplifier stages deliver 50 W per channel into 8 ohms and up to 70 W into 6 ohms at 1 kHz. That is enough for a classic 7.2 system or a Dolby Atmos layout with two height speakers. Like the whole Cinema series, the receiver was tuned by Marantz's acoustic specialists, aiming for precision and musicality with multichannel soundtracks and stereo listening alike.

Flexible installation

The seven speaker outputs can be reassigned for bi-amping or to drive a second zone, while two subwoofer outputs help deliver more even bass. For music, Pure Direct mode bypasses the processing for a cleaner signal path.

Full connectivity in a small chassis

Beyond its six HDMI inputs, the Cinema 70s S2 offers three analogue RCA inputs, an MM phono input for a turntable, optical and coaxial digital inputs, a front USB port and an FM/AM tuner. The 7.2-channel pre-outs let you add external power amplifiers later for more demanding speakers, while the Cinema 70s S2 keeps handling decoding, streaming and video. For custom installations there are also Zone 2 pre-out, IR input, Marantz remote bus and a 12 V trigger output.

New DAC and precise calibration

The most important change in Series 2 is in digital-to-analogue conversion. The Cinema 70s S2 adopts a new 32-bit 8-channel DAC that improves resolution, dynamic range and precision across all digital sources. As a result, one unit can handle film and series soundtracks and music listening with the same quality, with no need for a separate stereo amplifier for your home hi-fi. For such a compact model, it is an upgrade you hear straight away.

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X

All the main multichannel formats are supported: Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Atmos Music, DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS:X. Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization and DTS Virtual:X create a sense of height even without ceiling speakers, while with real height speakers the sound expands into a 5.2.2 layout.

Audyssey MultEQ XT and Dirac Live

Using the supplied microphone, Audyssey MultEQ XT measures the speakers from several listening positions and automatically adjusts level, distance and response to the room acoustics. Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume keep the sound balanced at low volume. For even more detailed correction, Series 2 is now compatible with Dirac Live, with an additional licence. It works with greater precision on both the frequency and time response of the system.

Easy setup

The on-screen graphical assistant guides you step by step, from connecting the speakers to calibration, so the system is ready without digging through the manual.

8K video, gaming and HEOS

The Cinema 70s S2 becomes the hub for your TV, UHD Blu-ray player, TV box and consoles. Of its six HDMI inputs, three are HDMI 2.1 with up to 40 Gbps bandwidth, for 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz. Upscaling lifts 1080p or 4K content up to 8K, and HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HLG and Dynamic HDR are supported.

Ready for gaming

VRR, ALLM and QFT provide smooth images and low latency, while HDMI inputs 4 to 6 support AMD FreeSync. The HDMI output with eARC brings high-resolution audio and Dolby Atmos from the TV's own apps back to the receiver.

Streaming with HEOS

Connected via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the Cinema 70s S2 is also a complete network player: Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music, Deezer and TuneIn, plus AirPlay 2 and Roon Ready. It plays FLAC, WAV and ALAC files up to 24-bit/192 kHz and DSD up to 5.6 MHz, and through HEOS it shares music with other compatible devices around the home. The HEOS app search finds songs across all your services at once, and each room can play the same or different music.

Two-way Bluetooth

Bluetooth receives music from a phone or tablet, but it can also send the receiver's sound to wireless headphones, with independent volume control. Ideal for a late-night movie without disturbing anyone.
