Reference valve CD player with 5814A and ECC88 valves and Wolfson DAC
Ten years of research for a valve CD player
The Rega Valve Isis is the result of ten years of research by Rega engineer Terry Bateman into a CD player with a valve output stage. The idea follows the valve signal chains used since the 1950s in musical instrument amplifiers and recording studios, through which much of the music we listen to has passed. The aim was not to add valves for a 'warm' sound, but to build a genuinely capable valve CD player.
The valve version of the Isis
The Valve Isis shares its digital section and USB input with the Isis, while differing fundamentally in the analogue stage. Top loading, a CNC-machined anodised aluminium case and a CNC Rega remote complete a player that handles CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3-CD and WMA-CD.
Part of the Reference series
Rega recommends the Osiris amplifier as the ideal partner for the Valve Isis, and it pairs equally well with the Aethos and the Mercury pre-amplifier. The Audio Beat praised its supreme tonal depth and bass performance.
Valve output stage
The heart of the Valve Isis is its analogue stage. Here the converter's signal does not pass through transistors, but through a valve chain designed around proven industrial circuits.
5814A and ECC88
The differential output of the Wolfson WM8741 DAC drives a differential amplifier using two triple-mica 5814A (ECC82 / 12AU7) military-grade triodes. This is followed by a passive second-order Butterworth LC filter and then an ECC88 (6DJ8 / 6922) buffer, which drives an output transformer for the balanced output. Passive filtering avoids active stages that could add a character of their own.
Distortion with musical logic
Typical THD is 0.06% and consists mainly of second-order harmonic, the type of distortion the ear perceives as most natural and least intrusive. Response extends from 30 Hz to 20 kHz within ±0.5 dB, while the XLR and RCA outputs deliver 2.4 V into 600 Ω, enough to drive any amplifier or pre-amplifier.
The result is a sound with outstanding tonal depth, rich texture and convincing bass, without sacrificing accuracy. The valves here are not decoration but a key tool in a carefully engineered circuit.
The 5814A and ECC88 are proven valve types with a long history in professional equipment, chosen for their stability and low noise. Rega specifies military-standard versions of both types, in keeping with the industrial approach that guided the entire design of the analogue stage.
Design without shortcuts
Rega approached the Valve Isis like a professional valve amplifier: with industrial circuits, strict component selection and complete isolation between sections.
Isolation at board level
The digital, analogue, motor and display sections sit on separate PCBs, so no section affects the others. The power supplies use Rega K-Power capacitors and fast-recovery diodes for a clean, stable voltage, which is especially important for valves. Every component was carefully chosen for its contribution to the final sound, rather than for its specification on paper alone.
Output transformer
The balanced output is driven by a transformer, a solution borrowed from the studio world that provides galvanic isolation and correct signal balance towards the amplifier. The Valve Isis therefore pairs ideally with amplifiers that offer a balanced input, such as the Osiris with its transformer input, or the Mercury.
Power consumption of 46 W, twice that of the Isis, reflects the heater requirements of the valves. Weighing 19.5 kg and sharing the Isis's CNC case, the Valve Isis offers the same build quality as Rega's flagship range.
Rega's philosophy is clear: valves are used where they offer a genuine advantage, and they are surrounded by the same rigorous engineering that characterises the entire Reference series. The result is a player with a distinctive character that makes no concessions on accuracy, timing or detail.
The Isis digital section
The Valve Isis shares the digital section of the Isis, developed by Rega for maximum accuracy in recovering data from the disc.
Precision reading
The mechanism, optical amplifier, DSP core, PLL, master clock and motor power supplies have been refined, with separate regulators and a dedicated 50 VA transformer for galvanic isolation. A custom servo controller keeps the laser in the optimum position, the chipset provides extra error correction and resistance to vibration, and a super-stable PLL clocks the chip. At start-up, the player calibrates itself to each disc, often reading scratched discs that other players reject.
USB input
Via a USB A-B cable, the Valve Isis connects to a computer to play internet radio, MP3 or WMA files through its internal DAC and valve output stage. The interface is isolated, with its own regulated power supply, keeping computer noise away from the valve stage.
A low-noise data bus design keeps the DAC's ground and signal connections clean. The signal reaching the valves is therefore as accurate as possible, allowing the valve analogue stage to express its character fully and faithfully.
This digital section, shared with the Isis, is the product of five years of design work. The Valve Isis thus combines the reliability and reading accuracy of the Isis with the unique character of its valve analogue stage, offering the best of both worlds in a single player.
