TG2 preamp and passive inductor EQ in one channel
The TG Channel MKII, now named TG12411 by Chandler Limited, combines two classic circuits: Wade Goeke’s TG2 preamp and an equalizer redesigned from the TG12410 Transfer Console, the mastering counterpart of the original “Beatles desks”. The renaming came with no change to the circuit.
The active sections use the same discrete amplifiers and transformers as the TG1 Limiter and TG2. The passive EQ is an all-inductor design with sweet highs, large lows and a very narrow mid cut. Its sound compares closely with Pultec and Lang program EQs. Put simply, a “TG Pultec” with a TG preamp thrown in.
A “TG Pultec” with a preamp
The TG12410 Transfer Console was the tool Abbey Road used to master recordings made on the TG desks. Its equalizer, redesigned by Chandler Limited, meets the TG2 preamp here in a channel that can cover an entire recording on its own.
The preamp
The preamp section is the same circuit as the TG2: discrete amplifiers and custom-wound transformers, with a warm, dense sound and an open top. It accepts microphone, line or instrument via the DI input, with gain and output in 5 dB steps for repeatable settings.
The passive equalizer
The EQ is entirely inductor-based. The High Shelf gives sweet highs without harshness, the Mid Peak brings out presence, and the narrow Mid Cut precisely removes boxiness and muddy areas. The Low Boost at 50 to 200 Hz builds big, round lows, with peak or shelf at 100 and 200 Hz, and the Low Cut clears out the rest.
In the session
On vocals, bass, guitar or overheads, the TG Channel MKII gives a finished sound right at the source. Phantom power and phase reverse are on hand, XLR connections run through transformers and power comes from the external Chandler PSU-1.
