Valve preamp from Abbey Road’s REDD.51 consoles
Chandler Limited’s REDD.47 Mic Amplifier recreates the valve line amplifiers of Abbey Road’s rare EMI REDD.51 consoles, from around 1959 to 1968. The original REDD.47 was a central component of the console and amplified almost every stage of the audio path: mic and line inputs, echo sends and monitors.
Its punchy, aggressive character marked everything recorded in Studio Two between 1964 and 1968, including many Beatles tracks. Chandler’s version adds more gain and ranges from pristine clean sound to rich, saturated tone with up to 2% harmonic distortion before clipping, enough to reproduce the distortion heard on “Revolution”.
Abbey Road’s “Holy Grail” preamp
Before the transistor TG consoles, Abbey Road worked with the REDD valve consoles. At the heart of the REDD.51 was the REDD.47, the amplifier that gave signals the dense, upfront sound of mid-’60s Studio Two recordings.
From clean to saturated
At low gain the REDD.47 sounds clean, rich and immediate. As gain rises, the EF86 and E88CC valves add harmonics and saturation, up to 2% distortion before clipping. One channel can therefore deliver anything from subtle warmth on a vocal to the dirty, aggressive guitar sound of “Revolution”.
Precise gain setting
Main gain is stepped from 16 to 52 dB, with ±5 dB Fine gain for small adjustments and +57 dB total gain. The continuous output control lets you drive the circuit hard while keeping the right level into your converter.
Filter and connections
The inductor-based rumble filter, with eight positions from 30 to 180 Hz, cleans up the lows without changing the character. A 20 dB pad, phase reverse, +48 V phantom power and a 1/4" DI input cover every source, XLR connections pass through custom-wound transformers and the power supply is internal.
