Two-channel EMI TG mic preamp from the Abbey Road consoles
The TG2 Pre Amp/DI recreates the rare EMI TG12428 preamp used in EMI and Abbey Road recording and mastering consoles in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Its sound appears on many famous recordings made at the studio, including The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” and Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon”.
It uses the same discrete transformer-balanced amplifiers as the TG series limiter and delivers a creamy, smooth tone with a surprisingly open, clear top end. A small rise in the high frequencies and some warmth-inducing distortion make up its character: body and punch with a beautifully extended top.
The preamp of the TG consoles
EMI’s TG consoles, with transistors instead of valves, changed the sound of Abbey Road from 1968 onwards. The TG12428 preamp was the first stage of every signal, and Chandler Limited’s TG2 brings it into a two-channel rack unit.
Warmth with an open top
The TG2 is not a neutral preamp. The slight lift in the highs and the gentle distortion of the circuit give vocals density, acoustic instruments life and drums punch, while guitars sound full without blurring.
Gain and impedance
Gain is set in 5 dB steps from +5 to +75 dB, and the output is continuous, so you can drive the circuit as hard as you like and then trim the level. Selectable 1200 or 300 Ω input impedance changes how the microphone behaves and offers two different colours.
Practical features
Each channel has +48 V phantom power, phase reverse and a 1/4" 100 kΩ DI input for guitar, bass or keys. The 2×1 summing function combines the two channels, for example two microphones on a guitar cabinet. XLR inputs and outputs pass through custom-wound transformers. The external Chandler PSU-1 power supply is required and sold separately.
