Chandler’s Germanium preamp in 500 Series format
The Germ 500 MKII is Chandler Limited’s well-known Germanium preamp adapted for 500 Series racks. It uses classic germanium transistors in class A, transformer-balanced circuits, with the same transformers and amplifier blocks as the rack version, so the sound is the same: thick and creamy.
The MKII updates the original Germ 500 with an improved faceplate layout and a new look. The power section was also upgraded, so the module starts up without issues in current lunchboxes and racks. Chandler has tested it in racks from API, BAE, A-Designs, Purple and Empirical Labs.
Germanium in 500 Series
Germanium transistors were the foundation of the first transistor consoles, and their sound is softer and more organic than silicon. The Germ 500 MKII brings that sound into a single 500 Series slot.
Thick and creamy
Takes gain body and a smooth texture, especially on vocals, bass and guitars. Because Chandler uses the same transformers and amplifier blocks as the rack Germanium Pre Amp, the sound stays the same in the smaller format.
Gain, Feedback and Thick
Stepped gain covers −5 to +65 dB. The adjustable Feedback changes the negative feedback, from a cleaner to a fuller, more driven sound, while Thick mode adds low end. The pad handles loud sources and the 100 kΩ DI input connects guitar, bass or keys.
Compatibility
The upgraded power section of the MKII eliminates start-up issues in current lunchboxes and racks. +48 V phantom power and phase reverse are on hand.
