The Abbey Road limiter with modern control flexibility

The TG12413 Zener Limiter was designed by Chandler Limited’s Wade Goeke for the 75th anniversary of Abbey Road Studios and is based on the EMI circuits used to record The Beatles and Pink Floyd. It continues a lineage that starts with the RS114 valve limiter of 1954 and runs through the 1968 RS168 Zener Limiter, the TG12345 console channel and the 1974 TG12413.

Chandler kept the sound of the TG circuits and added the control a modern studio needs: switchable input impedance, an 11-position attack, a 21-position release, a sidechain filter and three operating characters, Comp 1, Comp 2 and Limit. The result is a stereo dynamics processor that moves from discreet compression to hard limiting and deliberate colour while keeping its tight, warm signature.

The legacy of the EMI limiters

In the EMI studios the limiter was never just a safety net against overloads. From the RS114 valve limiter to the RS168 Zener Limiter, Abbey Road engineers used it to give instruments density and placement, and the TG12345 console put one on every channel. Chandler Limited’s TG12413 Zener Limiter brings that character back in a unit that fits today’s workflow.

Three characters in one unit

The mode selector offers two compression curves and a limit mode. Comp 1 and Comp 2 suit vocals, bass and acoustic instruments where you want natural control of dynamics. Limit holds peaks firmly on drums, electric guitars or the master bus.

Precise timing control

The 11-position attack and 21-position release are stepped, as are Input and Output. Settings can be recalled exactly and both channels match perfectly in stereo use. The unit runs as a stereo processor or as two independent channels.

Sidechain, input and THD

The sidechain filter, with positions from 30 to 300 Hz, keeps low frequencies from pumping the compression, which is invaluable on the mix bus. The High/Low input switch changes how hard the circuit is driven, while THD mode adds harmonic colour. XLR inputs and outputs pass through custom-wound transformers, with true bypass for instant comparison. The unit is powered by the external Chandler PSU-1, sold separately.
