Valve compressor/limiter rooted in Abbey Road’s Fairchild 660
The RS660 is a handmade mono valve compressor and limiter with transformers at the input and output and an internal power supply, in a two-rack-space chassis. It builds on the advances that began with the EMI RS124 and Fairchild 660 at Abbey Road in the ’60s and distils them into a more refined compression circuit.
It is not a simple reproduction of the legendary valve levelers. Built around a 6386 valve, the RS660 was tuned for a specific sound, with the character of the historic 660 and beyond. It comfortably controls sources from vocals to explosive drums and raucous guitars, and through its THD mode it can also deliver pure colour without compression.
From the Fairchild 660 to the RS660
The mono Fairchild 660 arrived at Abbey Road in 1964 and quickly won engineers over for vocals and drums, becoming a staple of The Beatles’ records. It gave vocals presence and, on Ringo’s drums, made the cymbals sound almost backwards. Chandler Limited’s RS660 continues that statement with a voice of its own.
A valve at its heart
The circuit is built around a 6386 valve, with a 6CG7 and 6AL5 completing the path. The 7-position Time Constant selector sets how the compression behaves over time, from fast peak control to slow, musical breathing.
Comp, Limit and THD
Comp and Limit modes cover everything from gentle smoothing to firm peak holding. THD mode, informed by the TG1 and TG12413 Zener Limiter, produces light to heavy harmonic distortion and overdrive for colour without compression.
In the studio rack
Selectable 200 or 600 Ω output impedance and stereo linking of two units make the RS660 flexible for tracking, mixing and mastering. XLR inputs and outputs pass through custom-wound transformers, and the power supply is built into the two-rack-space chassis.
