The legendary limiter of the EMI TG consoles in a stereo unit

The TG1 recreates the EMI TG12413 limiter found in the custom EMI and Abbey Road recording and mastering consoles of the late ’60s. These units were never commercially available and only EMI studios had access to them. The limiter sat on every channel of the TG consoles used to record The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” and Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon”, as well as albums by Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones.

It was originally intended to come close to the Fairchild 660/670 loved by engineers such as Geoff Emerick, but it ended up with a special sound of its own. Chandler Limited’s Abbey Road Special Edition features fully discrete circuitry, transformers at the input and output and a harmonic distortion function on each channel.

The limiter on every EMI channel

When EMI moved from the REDD valve consoles to the transistor TG desks, every channel gained its own compressor/limiter for the first time. The TG12413 thus became part of the Abbey Road sound in the late ’60s and through the ’70s. Chandler Limited’s TG1 brings that circuit into a stereo rack unit.

Warm, dense character

The limiting element is a rarely seen diode network that produces smooth, pleasing distortion. The sound, often compared to a Fairchild 670 pushed to the extreme, is warm, open and audibly squeezed, while keeping its clarity and high-frequency response.

Simple, fast operation

The TG1 gives you the essentials: High/Low input, continuous Input, stepped Output, Comp or Limit selection and a 6-position Recovery with fixed attack. It runs as a stereo unit or as two independent channels, and true bypass allows instant comparison.

Harmonic distortion mode

On the Abbey Road Special Edition, a switch per channel bypasses the compression threshold but keeps all circuits in the signal path. The unit becomes a harmonic distortion generator of up to 2%, with the amount set by the input and the level by the output. You can run distortion on one channel and hard limiting on the other. Power comes from the external Chandler PSU-1, sold separately.
