Compact bookshelf speakers with a phenolic resin cabinet
Rega sound in a compact size
The Rega Kyte is a compact two-way bookshelf speaker designed to suit almost any hi-fi system. It is built by hand at Rega's factory in the UK and stands out for its cabinet: instead of wood or MDF, Rega uses phenolic resin, the same material it uses for its turntable platters. It comes in black and is sold as a pair.
A company that invests in research
Rega has been making loudspeakers since the late 1980s. Instead of heavy advertising, it invests in research and development, designing its own ZRR tweeter, MX-125 woofer and crossovers. Investment in phenolic resin moulding tools allowed, according to Rega, a very rigid cabinet at a lower cost than other British speakers of similar quality.
Ideal pairings
Rega recommends the Kyte with the io amplifier and with the Planar 1, Planar 1 Plus, Planar 2 and Planar 3 turntables. It is also part of the ready-made Rega System One. The Norwegian magazine Stereo+ named it Product of the Year 2021/2022.
Phenolic resin cabinet
The most distinctive feature of the Kyte is its cabinet. Instead of the usual MDF boxes, Rega moulded a cabinet from phenolic resin, a thermoset material it knows well from its turntables. It is an unusual choice in loudspeakers, and one that shapes both the sound and the look of the Kyte.
Why phenolic resin
Phenolic resin is extremely rigid and has low colouration. A cabinet that does not 'sing' along with the music lets the drivers be heard clearly, without adding a tonal character of its own.
Rega invested in moulding tools using specialist materials to achieve this construction. Thanks to that investment, the cost stays lower than that of other British speakers of similar quality.
The rounded shape of the cabinet gives the Kyte a discreet, modern look, designed to blend into most interiors, from a classic living room to a minimalist study. These are speakers that do not need to be hidden away.
Ceramic plates and bracing
Inside, Rega fitted four ceramic plates and a system of internal bracing. The aim is to suppress cabinet vibration and resonance.
According to Rega, this construction improves dynamics and low-frequency performance, which is especially valuable in a speaker of this size.
The result is a speaker that sounds bigger than its dimensions suggest, with tight bass and clear mids even at high volume levels.
This approach comes straight from Rega's turntable experience, where controlling vibration is fundamental.
Drivers designed by Rega
The Kyte uses drivers that Rega designs and builds itself, drawing on decades of loudspeaker experience. The crossover is also designed in-house, so that every part of the signal path from amplifier terminal to driver cone is under Rega's control.
Hand-made MX-125 woofer
Mid and low frequencies are handled by the hand-made 12.5 cm MX-125 driver. Its cone is rigid yet light, for tight control of its movement.
The driver has a four-layer voice coil, which keeps dynamics high and distortion low.
The same driver is used in Rega's AYA floorstanding speakers, which shows the company's confidence in its design and its ability to scale up.
Together with the ZRR, it is the driver that defines Rega's characteristic midrange, where voices and most instruments live.
ZRR tweeter with waveguide
High frequencies come from the ZRR tweeter, designed by Rega and mounted in a waveguide. The waveguide controls the dispersion of sound, so that the treble reaches the listener cleaner and more refined, with a smoother transition to the woofer.
The two drivers, working together through Rega's crossover, give a coherent, natural presentation, with the warmth and liveliness described by reviewers.
Reviews from Tone, The Ear, Hi-Fi & Stereo and Stereo+ agree on one point: the Kyte is musical, lively and coherent, at an accessible price.
The ZRR derives from Rega's RX speakers.
Placement and partnering
The Kyte was designed to adapt to different rooms and systems. It can sit on a shelf, a piece of furniture or a bookcase, and with the appropriate adaptor on floor stands.
Flexible placement
Each speaker comes with a removable foot that provides stability and the right angle on a shelf or piece of furniture. For use on third-party stands, Rega offers a separate adaptor, sold separately.
The bass reflex port is at the rear, so leaving a little space between the speaker and the wall is recommended for balanced bass.
At 32.5 x 18.8 x 23.2 cm and 3.73 kg per speaker, the Kyte fits easily even into small rooms and busy living spaces.
Placed roughly as far apart as the listening distance and angled slightly towards the listener, they create a stable, clear stereo image.
Which amplifier suits
With a nominal impedance of 6 Ω and sensitivity of 89 dB, the Kyte is driven comfortably by moderately powered amplifiers. Rega quotes a guide power of 80 W per channel, noting that it depends on the quality of the amplifier.
Rega's io amplifier, with 30 W per channel and a built-in phono stage, is its natural partner. Add a Planar 1 and you have the System One.
This combination was designed from the start so that each piece suits the other, with a single sound character from cartridge to speakers.
Even with amplifiers from other makers, the moderate sensitivity and friendly impedance make the Kyte an easy load to drive.
