The mastering equalizer born from the EMI TG12345 console
The TG12345 Curve Bender is the ultimate TG equalizer, released for the 75th anniversary of Abbey Road Studios. It was designed by Chandler Limited’s Wade Goeke based on the EMI TG12345 console used to record The Beatles and Pink Floyd, and continues the tradition of EMI equalizers from the 1954 RS57 to the 1969 TG12345 and the 1974 TG12412.
The nine selections of the vintage version became 51 EQ points, with a multiply switch that raises boost and cut up to ±13.5 dB and sharpens the Q. The high and low bands offer bell or shelf selection, and high-pass and low-pass filters complete a stereo tool that covers both mixing and mastering.
The TG console sound, in 51 points
The equalizers on the TG consoles were simple, with few choices, yet their sound defined records such as “Abbey Road” and “The Dark Side of the Moon”. The Curve Bender keeps that character and adds the precision today’s mixing and mastering work demands.
Four bands and two filters
The Treble, Presence 1, Presence 2 and Bass bands cover 35 Hz to 20 kHz with selected frequencies. Treble and Bass switch from peak to shelf, while high-pass filters from 20 to 320 Hz and low-pass filters from 30 to 2 kHz clean up the edges of the spectrum.
Steps for mastering
With the switch at x1, each band moves in 0.5 dB steps up to ±5 dB, ideal for the small, repeatable moves of mastering. At x1.5 the steps become 1.5 dB and the range reaches ±13.5 dB, with a change in the bell, for more creative moves in the mix. The L/R output is also set in 0.5 dB steps.
Circuit and connectivity
The circuit is discrete transistor in the EMI TG tradition, and the XLR inputs and outputs pass through custom-wound transformers. True bypass allows instant comparison. Power comes from the external Chandler PSU-1, sold separately.
