Alternatively, combine them with other speakers in the acclaimed RUBICON series for a high-performance stereo set-up or home cinema system.Either way, you’re in for an experience. DRIVERSThe 4.5” woofer is airflow optimized to achieve the best possible coupling between the wood fiber cone and the real wood veneer cabinet. In fact, the technological breakthroughs designed for the larger EPICON 6 and EPICON 8models have been channelled into EPICON 2 to create a loudspeaker that performs way beyond its size expectations.EPICON 2 demonstrates perfectly what this new series is all about: Minimal signal degradation… or put bluntly: Transparency and revelation taken to an - until now – unseen level!This speaker demonstrates a highly linear and coherent response, and integrates well with small to medium sized rooms. The woofer roll-off is slow, and the speaker reaches deep into the lowest frequencies. All in all, in most setups this will sound like a much larger speaker than it really is.Within its working range the EPICON 2 will fully match the performance quality of its larger siblings, the EPICON 6 and EPICON 8. This is the new compact loudspeaker for the purist seeking high-performance. SMCFor years designing magnet systems has been a DALI specialty. For the EPICON 2 we decided to challenge the highest market standards and to take magnet system design further than ever before in order to reduce distortion generated from less than perfect magnet systems. The answer turned out to be a Soft Magnetic Compound (SMC) material which offers exactly the right physical properties: Very high magnetic conductivity and very low electrical conductivity (approx. 1/10.000’s of iron). The result is a dramatic reduction in distortion caused by mechanical loss in the magnet system. The high magnetic conductivity is instrumental in more or less eliminating the frequency depended effect of hysteresis. The electrical non-conductive nature of the SMC material eliminates the induction of modulating magnet fields in the magnet gab and significantly lowers the eddy current on the pole piece caused by the movement of the voice coil. The resulting reduction of distortion is both very clearly measurable and indeed audible TWEETERLow resonance frequency, high power handling, and exceptional headroom for high sound pressure levels and extreme excursions are all characteristics of the oversized soft dome tweeter. Incorporating an ultra-thin magnetic fluid for cooling, the fluid has a very high flux saturation point for greater power handling.This also means superb control of coil movement – even at very high sound pressure levels. Free of artefacts, e.g. resonances and high Q peaks the EPICON 2 tweeter features an extremely smooth and wide horizontal dispersion – one of our sound design trademarks. Even the detailing of the faceplate of the tweeter module is designed for optimal horizontal dispersion. WOOFERWith the background of in-depth loudspeaker driver design for years, and having engineers with loudspeaker drivers manufacturing experience in-house, DALI started up the process of establishing in-house production of drivers in 2009. Today we are proud to present the result: The DALI EPICON 2 woofer are not only developed - but also manufactured at the DALI headquarters in Denmark. At DALI we believe in designs based on low mechanical loss. Actually we were among the first to insist on controlling the frequency response by carefully balanced designs. We want the amplifier voltage and current to be the factor to control the frequency response by carefully balanced designs. The wood fibre technology has proven to be a key in reproducing the finest details and dynamics in the music with very low loss of information. Wood fibres add stiffness to very light paper cone membranes, ensuring non-uniform break-up characteristics within the material. The result is a structural stiffness showing top-class behaviour. The wood fibre cone terminates in a low-loss rubber surround that is fitted to a die cast aluminium chassis. Assembly of the cone, surround, voice coil and chassis is done in highly accurate tools for the maximum alignment accuracy. CABINETWorking both as an acoustic tuned ‘spring’ for the drivers, as well as getting rid of reaction force (resonant) energy, the cabinet is an important part of the entire speaker system. A rigid construction is necessary to optimize the working environment for both woofers and tweeter. The front baffle, sides and top of the EPICON 2 are heated in a process that allows us to press it into an organic shape. This design increases overall rigidity and severely reduces cabinet resonances. Furthermore standing waves are practically eliminated as there are no parallel surfaces reflecting sound waves. With a thickness of 33 mm the dual-layer front baffle ensures that energy from the drivers is radiated as acoustic energy, and not as vibrations in the cabinet. The curved shape of the front baffle is also a contributing factor in ensuring a stable acoustic platform. At the very bottom of the cabinet, you will see that the hardwired crossover is mounted in its own enclosure - free from the dynamic variation of cabinet pressure inside the bass reflex enclosures. The finish of the cabinet is real wood veneer which is lacquered for a total of 10 times. And in between, each layer is hand polished to ensure a deep, high gloss and elegant surface. 10 times of lacquer also ensures a sturdy finish with a thickness of almost 2 mm. Flax is the answer to the low mass/rigidity/damping equation, leading to sound clarity and precision.This unique Flax/Beryllium combination gives music incredible warmth and musicality. Made in France, this patented flax membrane has already proven itself in Focal home and in-car speakers. The midrange speaker uses TDM Tuned Mass Damping) suspension, and every Kanta speaker is also equipped with an NIC (Neutral Inductance Circuit) driver, which stabilises the magnetic field for perfectly defined sound and better controlled bass. Everything is designed and made to create acoustic softness and warmth: the density and stiffness of the baffle and shell materials, softened angles and double vents. The baffle is made of a new material to suit the acoustic parameters. It is moulded in one piece from high density polymer (HDP). This material has excellent performance: it is 70% denser than MDF, 15% stiffer and provides 25% more damping. The one-piece baffle totally eliminates any sound diffraction. Kanta incorporates Power Flow technology with two vents, on the front and rear faces, to limit bass compression. Focal's research is geared towards reducing distortion in every register. With Kanta, the treble register is reproduced by a new pure Beryllium tweeter. This IAL3 tweeter combines the principles of IAL (Infinite Acoustic Loading) and IHL (Infinite Horn Loading) tweeters, both of which help with the absorption of waves, thus lowering the tweeter frequency. Our engineers have revisited their choice of ‘Focus Time’, which corrects speaker alignment, making them the same distance from the ear.The rear shell is made in one-piece integrally moulded wood. The Zamac base also brings out masses of character. With its spikes and cups, the base provides great stability from a very small footprint. Final details: the glass-covered top and magnetic grille fixings.When these are removed, they reveal the speakers' flax cones, the final design touch that gives Kanta its unique look.A wide range of combinations are available to fit into every interior space. This is what guarantees an extremely sharp reproduction.NIC (Neutral Inductance Circuit)Since the beginning, we have always had a great interest in the magnetic circuit, an essential aspect of a speaker drive unit. The precision and detail of audio reproduction depends on the stability of the magnetic field. After having pushed back the limits in electromagnetic technology with the Grande Utopia EM and the Stella Utopia EM, our engineer discovered that the magnetic field varies regardless of its intensity. Indeed, it is not stable because it is modulated by three factors: the movement of the voice coil (Lenz's law), the current passing through it (Foucault current) and the frequency. Consequently, the voice coil, the moving part, is in the magnetic field which becomes too variable, and this leads to loss of precision.The NIC technology lies in a Faraday ring whose dimensions, materials and positioning we were able to optimise to make the magnetic field be no longer affected by the position of the voice coil, by the amperage or the frequency of the current passing through it. This solution permits to control the magnetic field to decrease the effects of distortion and give the sound a very high-definition and an unprecedented dynamic.TMD (Tuned Mass Damper)The midrange register is no doubt the most complicated to control in a sound system.Thanks to the power of finite element analysis, our teams have revealed resonances which alter definition in the suspension which connects the cone to the basketThe solutions already known for increasing the damping properties of the suspension all result in an increase of the mass which consequently alters definition. The answer came from a technology used in earthquake-resistant skyscrapers and which is also used for the suspension on racing cars. This technology is called a  " Tuned MAss Damper" : an additional mass oscillates in opposition to the resonance frequency to control it.Our Tuned Mass Damper consists in simply two tubular rings on the suspension to avoid deformation of the cone without afflicting the dynamics. It reduces drastically the distortion and increase the definition.IHL (Infinite Horn Loading)Our Beryllium tweeter features an incredibly light and extremely rigid dome, that deliver a transparent and dynamic sound. Its main limitation comes from the compression of air in the cavity behind it, that create interference with the incredible definition. To overcome this, the ideal would be to have a nearly infinite volume. But the requirement for Sopra to be compact meant that as much of the cabinet as possible had to be used for the bass. We had to explore other options for loading the tweeter, which led us to come up with the IHL system.The rear of the Beryllium tweeter is loaded via a small cavity which is connected to the exterior of the enclosure by a horn. whom inside is filled with a damping material. Sound waves from the rear of the tweeter are delicately and gradually absorbed. Its acoustic impedance approaches zero so that no resistance alters the movement of the dome. This reduces distortion by 30% and pushes definition to its maximum.

The suspension between the dome and its bracket uses Poron, a material with shape memory. This suspension method is directly derived from the famous Utopia Beryllium tweeter, making it possible to reduce distortion by a factor of three in the 2-3kHz range, where the human ear has very great sensitivity.The inverted dome’s spatial characteristics and very low directivity already make it greatly superior to the conventional domes used by our competitors. This guarantees an incredibly stable sound stage which makes the listening position much less critical.
