Podcasting is no longer a privilege reserved for experts, today, anyone can start easily and affordably. The key is knowing where to begin, so you can achieve the best possible sound with the right tools.
Microphone
You don’t need high-end equipment — a simple, easy-to-use microphone with a cardioid or wide-cardioid pickup pattern is ideal, as it minimizes sound capture from the sides and rear.
A frequency response range between 40 Hz and 18 kHz is more than adequate for voice recording. Look for models that emphasize the midrange frequencies (around 3 kHz) and include a low-cut filter to reduce unwanted rumble and background noise.
USB microphones are very convenient, especially for beginners — they connect directly to your computer without the need for extra external devices.
(However, in more advanced setups, XLR microphones paired with an audio interface are preferred for superior control and audio quality.)
Audio Interface
Ideal for those using an XLR microphone — the audio interface converts the analog signal into digital and sends it to your computer via USB.
Key features worth having:
- XLR input + phantom power capability (for condenser microphones)
- Sufficient preamp gain — ideally more than 50 dB
- Reliable, low-latency data transfer — USB connectivity is usually sufficient
